Knights like winning feeling

February 24, 2007
NEWCASTLE Knights emerged 30-18 victors over Penrith Panthers in an NRL trial in water-logged Darwin.
Newcastle opened strongly when Kurt Gidley converted his own try inside five minutes.
Brad Tighe also crossed for the Knights, but it was Penrith who led 12-10 at the half through tries to Paul Aiton and Trent Waterhouse.
Then the heavens opened, but the standard didn't drop after the break, both sides displaying good ball control in monsoonal conditions.
Newcastle, hampered by the absence of stars Andrew Johns and Danny Buderus, scored first again in the second half when Cory Paterson went over.
Penrith hit back through Geoff Daniela and the score was 18-18 with 15 minutes left on the clock.
Then Newcastle's rising star, 19-year-old five-eighth Jarrod Mullen, showed both athleticism and leadership to steer the Knights home.
The youngster led from the front, alongside Terrence Seu Seu, who scored a double.
Panthers coach Mathew Elliot said the loss allowed him to pinpoint gaps in their game that he could fill before the season proper begins.
"We just need to work on a few things so it was good for us in that respect," Elliot said.
"A large part of the result was Newcastle's superior kicking game and our inability to hang onto the pill."
Knights coach Brian Smith welcomed back that winning feeling.
"We can't help ourselves, everyone likes to win, it feels better," Smith said.

Great to see the young guys making an impact. What chance is Seu Seu of being Buderus' fill-in until he returns from suspension?

what a list of try scorers - 4 tries scored by kids who could play Flegg this year - and no doubt Walsh and Mullen led the way - and they could both play Flegg as well.

Top Stuff!

Uate, Paterson, and Seu Seu are in for a big season. With all of them playing PL and some stints in FG. They should be ready for the top 17 full-time by 2008.

I said it a while ago but someone said it was unlikely to happen..

But I saw on the news or read in the paper that Smith was very impressed with the way Seu Seu was training and that it wouldnt suprise me if he was there for round 1 on the bench maybe to come on once Quigley comes off.

Also the way Uate is going im starting to think he'll definitely get a go within the first 5 rounds.

Just reading through the Panthers forums and arent they bringing out excuses lol

There were a few issues to come out of the game which according to Fibroman included;

* The ref had a Barry Crocker.
* Our tactics of playing dry weather football in monsoon conditions were flawed.
* We missed Brett Firman's kicking game.
* It was hard for the players to motivate themselves against the Knights Jersey Flegg side.
* The late kick off time couple with the fact the casino closes at midnight effected our players concentration.
* It will take time for the three on field captains to gel as apparently they used the papers, scissors and rock method to make crucial on field decisions.
* The players were worn out from the intensive fitness training they have undergone in the off season.
* We were outmuscled by the much bigger Knights pack!

Its good to see Seu Seu have a strong game. I think it will be hard for him to break into first grade with the number of utilities that we already have. But if he continues training strong and puts together solid performances in premier league, i wouldn't mind if he was given a bench spot. Especially since Buderus isn't expected to play eighty minutes, he will be the perfect substitute. But then, we already have Brown - however, who would you guys prefer on the bench, Brown or Seu Seu?

For me Seu Seu, he has that quick pace that would be good against tired Forwards, Brown doesnt seem like a hooker to me.

I was happy when I heard this morning that Newcastle had won. When I saw the team list I was abit unsure. But good on them, hopefully that carry's into the Cessnock game.

We'll see how we go next week - it's rare for us to get a win in trials, so it feels good but doesn't mean a great deal. Especially when we usually shrug off trial losses with the same excuse.

Like to see who will be in/out when all our Stars come back, Milton should be right for next trial? And I think Polglase will get a go too...

Priceless! 3 Captains to Gel, they have been playing together for what 2-4 Years... Puletua, Gower and Priddis?

Late Kick Off time  and I dont know what they are talking about when it comes to the Flegg Boys... They dominated a Panthers team!

A while ago though some people might have been a bit iffy about the suggestion of Seu Seu at hooker... he's very good there but I take that with a grain of salt, something tells me we can't really lock him in to a position quite yet.

Well if he did get a bench spot, you can be guaranteed that Smith will be telling him to take as many runs as possible. He is extremely quick off the mark and bring him on in the final twenty of each half and you would expect dividends.

Really glad that we won our first trial match. When we got the spoon in 05 it was also the year that we didn't win a game in the pre-season, so it sorta feels good to have notched a confidence building win there. And the big guns weren't even playing which is a bonus.

Sounds like Kurt must have done OK at fullback, he scored the first try after all. Also I'm happy to see Tighe's name on the scorecard, he is a guy who I really want to see playing centre or wing for us long term and a try in his first game this year definetly won't hurt his chances of getting a permanent first grade spot.
