We have to remember that some of these guys Tamale, King-Togia, Hamish Stewart, Ben Johnson, Egan, unless mistaken were playing Flegg early this year, perhaps even Ball
Agree.. I mean we arent dominating lower grade competitions like the Dogs (or Panthers in years gone by), mostly due to such a poor first half of the season, but there are more and more of these young sort of 16-19yr old kids starting to stand out.. and look like potential first graders..
The part that has messed up the 1st grade side is there were a couple of really lean years for us (around covid), and years when there were no young star forwards (bar Coric) coming through.. so im super excited about this young brigade.. but they are still a few years out like you said... and we cant bring them all through at once.. we need real first graders in 1st grade, and sort of 1 maybe 2 kids at a time getting bench time or for injury cover... we need them to want to be in our system and bide their time under Flanno...
Something Gus said ages ago kind of threw me at the time.. that the Roosters were the best junior development team in the comp.. and im like 'um what'.. but what he was trying to get across.. is that getting them to that 16-18yr old age is important (obviously).. but turning those kids into first graders is a different challenge... its very difficult.. and its something we have really struggled with.. even our best prospects took forever to actually reach 1st grade standard.. thats the part that I think Flanno will have his hands on, and in a few years I think we will be rolling (I hope).
The hardest bit I think.. will be picking which guys to bring through, which to let go.. and who to bring in from external to complement... thats the part I hope we get Browny for.. we cant keep them all.. esp when we end up with a glut of 2nd rowers for example.. some may end up in other positions.. but picking the most promising in a position is crucial to the clubs success.. its a huge opportunity cost to getting it wrong... seems like a fulltime job managing that alone.
