Hi all,

Following feedback from local businesses, I've just launched an online petition to encourage Kogarah Council and the St.George-Illawarra Dragons to organise a Street Parade in the Kogarah CBD to allow the local community to honour the 2010 Premiership winning Dragons. A non-internet petition of local businesses is also being collated.

Please sign in support at:

Hopefully we can arrange a red & white Christmas party or a season launch next year.

Fans given chance to honour NRL win

EVERYBODY loves a parade and St George Illawarra fans will finally get their chance to honour the victorious Dragons.

Kogarah will host a street parade and civic reception at the town centre next month to celebrate the team’s grand final victory.

St George Illawarra players went to Kogarah’s Jubilee Oval late on the evening of their win to meet thousands of fans who wanted to congratulate their heroes and attended a presentation event at Wollongong the next day.

But Kogarah Chamber of Commerce president Megan Barker said some business owners in the area felt excluded from the celebrations.

‘‘Shopkeepers kept their windows proudly decorated in red and white ... they have never wavered in their support but felt left out,’’ Ms Barker said.

Kogarah mayor Nickolas Varvaris and CEO of St George Illawarra Dragons Peter Doust had discussed holding a parade since the team’s win.

The idea of hosting a victory parade through Kogarah CBD was also discussed at last week’s Kogarah Council meeting.

“The entire St George Illawarra region is proud of what the Dragons have achieved this year and the council is very keen to mark this moment in history with a special event honouring the players and the coach”, Cr Varvaris said.

‘‘We are making arrangements, which will give fans the opportunity to see and thank their heroes.’’

A date is yet to be announced but a Kogarah Council spokeswoman said the parade would most likely be hold on a Friday.

Kogarah councillor Lachlan McLean said businesses would love to honour the Dragons and create closer ties with the St George club.

‘‘They felt more could have been done to decorate Kogarah CBD in the week leading up to the grand final, so a street parade is a great way to reward the businesses for their loyalty,’’ he said.

SUPPORT BASE

I have been a fanatical Dragons supporter for the last 40 years along with my two boys. I was privileged enough to witness the great atmosphere and result — it will be an event that I will cherish forever.

A street parade in Kogarah to commemorate the St George Illawarra Dragons mighty performance throughout 2010 will be much welcomed by all fans as it gives an opportunity to express their sincere gratitude.

Do you think there should be a street parade in Kogarah and if so when?

great news ... but to pick up new fans, we also need to have a street parade in Hurstville.

Maybe end of Feb, during Chinese New Year.

And every restaurant in the area would be targets to sell signed framed jumpers to.

anyone know an email address for any progressive Hurstville Alder-persons?

Don't normally sign these online petitions but made an exception in this case.

Bring on the belated Dragons parade

THERE was an overwhelming response from readers this week after it was announced Kogarah would host a street parade to honour the grand final victory of St George Illawarra Dragons.

Kogarah Council confirmed the celebration was expected to go ahead next month, most likely on a Friday.

George Vellis of Alexander’s Cafe, Kogarah, said although he was pleased a parade was given the green light, the decision was a belated one.

‘‘It’s good the moment will be relaunched because it had sort of been killed, but more could have been done earlier for the community following the win,’’ Mr Vellis said.

‘‘Especially when all the players have to do is stand on a bus and wave a trophy around.

‘‘Most of the sponsorship comes from this area but their presence has been unheard here.’’

Kogarah councillor Lachlan McLean co-ordinated a petition last weekend that included 40 business owners from Kogarah CBD, who supported the upcoming parade.

A date has not been set but Cr McLean said the majority of business owners would prefer that the event take place on a Saturday morning, like the annual Kogarah bed race.
Cr McLean said he sent copies of the petition to the St George Illawarra Dragons CEO Peter Doust and Kogarah MP Cherie Burton.
