Asked if he aspired to play for New Zealand, Hurrell said: ''I go for Tonga but if I get an opportunity to play for New Zealand, I'm all for it. I've got no regrets about my switching, I love the game.'' Having lived in Tonga for his first 18 years, Hurrell is still adjusting to life in New Zealand. ''I come from a big family,'' he said. ''Pretty poor and stuff. I try to keep humble because I grew up in a humble family.''

Here we go again!

What's the problem, hutch? How many chances will he get to compete as a Kiwi vs how many times playing for Tonga? He will play for NZ soon enough. Go Koni!!

The problem is that he is not a new zealander.

You highlight an important point though, nations outside of the big 3 need regular test matches! It is disgraceful that the last time any pacific nation outside of png in the 2010 four nations played a full strength test match was 2009!

did'nt cutie opt for australia over NZ because of origin????

nope, that was just fanciful thinking by the Kiwi hillbillies who thoroughly embarrassed themselves with the way they carried on over Hunt. Given the number of Aus born players NZ has picked up over the years (Swain, Cayless, Webb, Fein, Nightingale, Hoffman, Beale to name a few) it's got to be said that Kiwis are a bunch of ungrateful, paranoid turds. A harsh judgement perhaps, but true nevertheless. It's not just in league either. Kiwi teams have also been allowed to compete in Aus domestic basketball and soccer competitions. Yet despite this Aus generosity Kiwis still persist with their whinging and conspiracy theories. If SoO was really a conspiracy to pinch players from other countries then it has been a massive failure. But of course it isn't, and looking at some of the attempts by other countries to copy the concept it's not difficult to spot the motivation for most of the whinging - JEALOUSY.

Delusional. Go back and read some articles from the time, he said himself it came down to wanting to play for QLD, not a desire to play for Aus. He actually agreed to play for NZ and was picked in the squad until he got pressured by QLD to drop out.

But I've seen enough of your posts to realise it's not really worth getting into some sort of dissucussion with you. I'm sure your reply will be well thought out and spot on.

NZ have never lost a player to origin!

Ben Teo is one who has defected after having played for the Junior Kiwis.

I just can't believe how the RLIF can just sit back and let all these shananagans occur. How they cannot see that nations like Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, PNG etc need regular internationals and aneed for comparitive player payments and incentives is beyond comprehension. If we had strict eligibilty criteria that prevents this perverse bed-hopping between nations and regular fixtures for these 2nd tier nations to make we could see a very strong core of countries who could make a World Cup a very competitve and entertaining tournament which then leads to not only a stronger international game but also a stronger interest from fans.

Hurell's first priority is to his family, as he said, they are poor. That means very badly off, compared to us. He will do whatever is best for his immediate financial benefits, nothing else much matters to him, I would guess.

Teo has played tests for Samoa, he seems to be a confused individual though!

Spot on! They honestly must not care about these countries!

It's not his fault, it's the RLIF's fault. He can choose to be loyal to his country but he'd most probably only play once every four years, or every time there's a one off test before a four nations tournament and even so he'd earn peanuts compared to what he'd get paid playing for the kiwis. With that said it is just a game, it's not as if he's going to war for NZ.
