Kudos to the Refs

I didn't read the Roosters/NQ game thread but watched the game sober with the Leader of the Opposition and thought it was a much improved performance from the refs.

There was one forward pass for a try called back early against the Roosters that I missed because we've become so used to the refs missing them that it's become the new normal. Hess' try and the similar Roosters try were both well judged by the on-field man and the bunker.

There were a few good penalties given live and off the bunker for obstructing the chasers, one or two others could have been looked at but without a replay I couldn't be sure they were suspect.

I thought they missed another forward pass for Tupou's (match-winning?) try but, again, that is the new normal and they're wearing me down with their BS.

Overall, I thought it was much improved on the dross we have all complained about this season and that is from a losing fan.

The other plus of recent times is the willingness to finally sin bin blokes for pro fouls. There was another one last night. Wasn't long ago they would never do it no matter how blatant it was. The fact they are a more serious punishment than serious foul play because they won't use the send off is another matter.

The thing is some of the panellists on the Sunday Footy Show today suggested they are tiring from losing coaches at the press conferences scapegoating the refs (Macgregor, Maguire, Stuart) excusing their teams performances. It's happening too frequently - McGregor may have some legitimate complaints but some have suggested the Dragons should have never been in that position in the first place. In one of the disallowed try's the Dragons player places his arms on a Knights player running in, there was no reason for him to be doing that. He doesn't do that the Dragons have a try.

It's no coincidence that Stuart went on his rant when he did. It was a week that effectively killed off their finals chances, and they lost to a very weak and short Melbourne team. This would be the time the team would come under pressure for a bad year after what they did last year.

This week it's McGregor after his team, who is fighting to stay in the finals, loses to the worst team of the last 20 years.

This is not because the referees are bad (they are but they have been for years), it's because they want to change the media narrative to take focus away from their poor performances.

Funny - I thought the referees had too much input and determined the way the game went

In the first half it was "the Cowboys are our pet love"
In the second half it was "whoops, we've been found out Brokeback Mountain style - let's hammer the Cowboys to show we're not biased"

The Cowboys were throwing forward passes with gay abandon in the first half and none of them were called. The Roosters threw one and got pulled up for them twice

I wonder where the penalties were in the first half, when the Cowboys defenders thought they were playing AFL on kick chases and ran sideways to block attacking players coming through. Kyle Felt took two sideways steps to flatten someone right in front of the linesman...... and play on lol

On the Hess try, on the day I thought he was short and the video confirmed he definitely WAS short

When I re-watched the referee was right there, brilliantly positioned, so he must have genuinely thought he got there. I am not going to fault him. As for the bunker - there may have been a 1% chance it scraped a blade of the line which had come loose and was a few inches in front of the line. As the on-field decision was try, I suppose they had to award it in case the rogue paint was there.

On field referees were pretty good tonight Titans vs Eels , there were some tough calls that happened very quickly that they made and were spot on. Its a shame the video ref ruled a try for Semi Radradra when there were three knock on's in it and they ruled try. It was howler and for a moment I thought they had put sean hampstead back in the box. Lucky it was a blow out to the eels, because it would have been magnified by the media a lot more under a closer contest.

I've always hated the video refs more the on-field refs. The on-field refs have a harder job and frankly a more competent. Video refs were the worst under Billl Harrigan, and improved a lot under Daniel Anderson. They seem to have crept up worse this year under Tony Archer, but not to level they were at with Harrigan.

Agree with most of this. Watched the game with two other refs and we always nominate the decision live and then consider the bunker's view. The on-field refs got a number of 50-50 calls spot on but the General in the Bunker was down to his usual standard - absolutely appalling.

Vee, as a ref - would you say that it would be better to use the bunker only as a captain's call. So leave it out as much as possible, and put the onus on the players and let the on-field refs rule as they see it? The only proviso I would make for this would be that In-Goal judges would be useful to have as well.

So the standard Luke Patten level. HTF is he allowed in the bunker. He is deadset blind, incompetent or corrupt. Have I missed anything??

Yeah, I agree with in-goal refs and Captain's Call. The only reservation I would have is whatever feedback the NRL got from their lower grade trials. They don't release it so it's hard to know if there might be problems that we can't see.

One problem I can see is that everyone reckons players know whether a try has been scored or not. That was certainly the case in the past but players have become so good at saving seemingly certain tries that I suspect that premise is not as true as it was in the past.

I personally think a captains challenge won't work. Some captains debate anything that goes against them. Just imagine watching a Sharks or Cowboys game with Thurston and Gallen debating every call that goes against them.
