Kurt Gidley

What's the point of Gidley being named 18th man for Game 1 if he can't even earn a spot in the 17 for Game 2 when Timmins, Barrett and Gower are all out?

He started the year at 5/8, and has been going gangbusters all season at halfback.

Why wasn't he considered for the vacant #6 jersey ahead of Fittler?

2 reasons. An 18th man is a player who can play multiple positions so if there is an injury in the warm up they can fill in the spot. Also, Fittler is a better 5/8 in the selectors opinions, so thats why he was chosen.

Thats a fair enough reason Mick.

But if that was the case and Gidley was picked for, among other things, his versatility, you have to wonder why he wasn't used when NSW dropped 2 players from the squad in Game 1.

Gidley's getting the short end of the stick IMO. Seems to me like Gus sent out an S.O.S. before his ship was actually in trouble. He still had Gidley and Scott Hill at the ready.

Gould said it was because the 2 players were dropped well before game day, so they had more than enough time to bring in specialist players to replace them, rather than go for Gidley.

You have to remember that this game is in Brisbane, not Sydney. To put a player in the team on his debut in such an important position is a big ask in front of that kind of atmosphere, so I think Gidley missed out for that reason too.

As for Hill, well I kind of feel sorry for him, but they seemed to think that because he didn't play on the weekend there was a cloud hanging over him, and given his injury record over the past few years, it's hard to argue with that.

Call it what what u want. the 18th man was just a ploy so the Roo(s)ter could discuss a contract with Kidley. When he wouldn't sigh, Foould dumped him and bought in his A**boy Fweddy

I think Gidley should have been the NSW 5'8th if the selectors weren't considering Scott Hill. They obviously figure he was up to the task, otherwise they wouldn't have selected him in the squad and as 18th man to begin with. Gould wants Fitler in the side because he's a rooster, to generate publicity, and probably to unease the QLDers as well.

I'm a Knights fan but regardless, I have to say that I don't think Kurt's up to the task yet. Origin is a big ask and he's really not an experienced player.

I think having him as 18th man is fair enough because he has utility value, and also he gets the experience of hanging out at origin camp which is great - unless of course he picks up dodgy habits like leaving inappropriate voicemails

Having said that I'm happy for him to be 18th man, I'm not sure I understand why it's not Matt Cooper instead of Kurt... :?

And Ben Hornby was a veteran. If they didn't think Kidley was up to the task, they wouldn't have made him 18th man. Origin would be a big ask for anyone who is asked to take the step up for their first game. Its just an excuse for Foould and Fweddy to "go out instyle" together. Well it seems NSW are telling QLD that the rest of the team can't play and we need Fweddy to save us. Can anyone say TARGET. I sure hope your sholder is healed well and good 'cause Fweddy, you're gonna get smashed by the QLDers. Thanks a lot Foould.

No need to be sarcastic genekrupa. That was simply my opinion about Kurt, not Hornby.

And I was just compairing Two inexperienced players, one who got a chance (yeah right), Hornby and one who was told he was the 18th man but really was the 21st man (Kidley).

Cmon gene, you know as well as everybody else as has been said before that the purpose of the 18th man is to have a utility player who can fill in at various positions if there is an injury in the warm up etc. It does not mean he is the best 5/8, or the best winger, or the best centre, so if a position opens up well before game day then the selectors will pick the player they feel is the best for the job, and put simply that was not Kurt Gidley. Get over it and stop fishing.

Im just trying to point out the futility of going to older players when they could blood new ones. How does that help us next year?
