...meanwhile back onto NRL ....what are real chances of Coote leaving Cowboys? Tallis mentioned they had a big name in mind, hence are letting him look around? Anyone know more???

He's definitely been told to look elsewhere.
I think they have a gun junior fullback in their ranks and salary cap pressure will be mounting to hang on to everyone.

Definitely leaving. They will hold Pangia (future super star) but can't see the value in Coote. Personally I would throw the kitchen sink at him and play him in the halves.

Sydney clubs close in on North Queensland star

Published on Mar. 22, 2016

St George Illawarra are leading a pack of Sydney-based NRL clubs interested in the acquisition of North Queensland star Lachlan Coote.

Coote's management is set to hold discussions with the Dragons this week, with initial talks about a move to Manly Sea Eagles also continuing, according to Fox Sports' Market Watch column.

The 25-year-old has played a big part in the Cowboys' strong start to the season but is reportedly keen to come home to Sydney for the 2017 season.

Salary cap pressures mean the Cowboys are only likely to offer Coote a one-year deal, with the young fullback seeking a three-year deal to take him through to the end of the 2019 season.

We're in with a chance at least...

Question is do we really need him.

We have Duges/Mann/Mata'utia/Quinlan/Dufty

If Mann slowly enters the frame after being eased back, the answer is no.

If however the experiment is over, why not leave Duges at Full Back for this season, with Mata'utia/Quinlan as back up and Dufty to either be fast tracked or let go. In other words still not required.

If we lose PM or expect to, Coote may come in to calculations, but not for big dollars as he does not warrant it.

Maybe they see Coote as half in the Hornby mould?

At first I was against signing him, I thought he was Michael Gordon's age, 30, I could have sworn they came through grade at Penrith together. But if he is only 25, premiership winner, and probably a lot cheaper than Reynolds or Keary, then it could be a value buy. He ticks a lot of boxes. Only issue that has been mentioned is injuries. Hopefully he is over those now, going into his late 20's.

My thoughts exactly SF.
One or two become excess to requirements for next season.
Where would Coote play?
Coote will want big bucks and if someone offers him a 3 yr deal, I'd expect he would sign with them.
He is a premiership winning fullback that brings a lot to a team.

How can you be taken seriously with a user name like that!

Coote is a good full back, fact is we have stockpiled a SOO Full Back, a couple of average full backs and a gun junior who may, or may not make first grade. Then we have Mann.

Coote is not a half and has to date not played any half as far as I am aware.

At half we have a gun five eight, McCrone as a back up who is an average half, and Huch who is in the Dufty category.

We need a specialist quality half who can take control of our attack. That player will need a top kicking game.

The wish list of halves is small:

Elgey-gone
Cronk-unlikely to leave Melbourne
Brooks-inconsistent
Keary-if rumours are correct too expensive

Have I missed anyone ?

I would be searching the ESL for a gun English half

This is the issue, Coote imo can only be bought to the club @ fullback, there is no guarantee he could succeed at 5/8 and even if he could.. we really dont need another 5/8, we have Benji/Widdop/Mann/Nona/Quinlan/Wallace/Dufty and possibly Hutch all looking to fit in either the #1 or #6 Jersey.. they are all nippy litte runners, but none have proven they can lead a 1st grade football side (Benji does ok, but its still not his natural position).

However.. Coote would instantly be our #1 fullback (proven at first grade level, which the others are not), the Duges can go back to Centre where he is supposed to be.. but we still dont have that halfback we have been craving.. and we would need to offload a bunch of blokes, in particular Mann.. who is on a long contract.. if we can shake him, then sure Coote is great... but its 1 or the other, cant afford 2 of em.

TLDR - Coote only useful if we can offload Mann (was same story with Jack Bird), too similar.

Coote has more to offer than any of those you've mentioned. He can play 7, 6 & 1 with little to no issue. He'd even be better than Rein at 9 *tongue in cheek*. He is a left footer and can kick off the right. His defence at fullback is just as good as Dugan's and his running game is on par. Kick returns are similar. Best thing is, he can pass left AND right!!!!

I love the loyalty to Dugan, he is an exceptional player but be honest folks, Coote bring so much more. When we released him I was thinking it would bite us but after two very interrupted seasons and Moylan waiting we had little to no choice. It's no surprise he is one of the form players, he's bloody good and always has been.

He would transform your attack and be one of your genuine match winners. You've been a side which doesn't quite have that cohesion or threat in attack. He's a player who would give you that.
