I need to update next year. Have a Vaio and won't be getting another. Are Dell laptops good ? What about Apple Mac. Would like a 17'' screen. Apple doesn't use Windows is that correct ? so different programs for Word and XL. Is Apple difficult to use ? Many thanks and Seasons Greetings.

Finally! Someone realises the 'St George Illawarra' forum is just a ruse for 'IT support'!

Outlaw Pete - what are you looking to use it for? I go to ozbargain.com.au to see deals and also to see feedback on PCs etc. I am in the market for something although may wait until next year.

From experience on your comments, I have had a Dell, Apple, HP, Asus in the past and now have a Dell for home and Lenovo for work. Apple is easy to utilise but I prefer PCs and in order would rank them as follows:
Asus - get good bang for your buck (my one broke physically due to my own fault but they're even better now
HP - nice laptops however mine had the heating issue a couple of months ago and the class action was only applicable in the US and in any case had lapsed.
Dell - used to be at the top for what they were but haven't advanced as much as their competitors. They usually have good deals on these if you're patient. Their Alienware machinese are awesome although they weigh a tonne.
Lenovo - maybe it's because they gave me a brick for work but it's pretty darn bad except for the fingerprint login feature which I like.
Next year though I am thinking of getting a Clevo Horize which has pretty good reviews.
At the end of the day most are about the same. I'd just recommend to go to JB Hifi and/or Harvey Norman etc. to test out the feel of the laptops - usually most on display aren't the top models. The safest option though is definitely the Macbook Pro. As I mentioned go to ozbargain - there's also a tonne of deals coming out from Dick Smith these days.

You also need to be aware that some of your existing software (eg. games, etc) might not be compatible for both PC and Apple. Check it out before commiting to a purchase.

ShaiGuy's ranking seem consistent with my own experience.

Good luck

check out the forums at www.whirlpool.net.au for laptop opinions and advice.
The right laptop/laptops for you will depend on a few things...
your intended use.... ie gaming, study, word processing, autocad, downloading etc...
whether you will be using it by battery or AC most of the time...
preferred screen size...
your budget....
and how long you expect to keep it forbefore upgrading again...

Does Outlook work on a Mac Pro?

Macs are virtually virus proof Outlook is a major player in the virus game. My suggestion is if you use email a lot use Hotmail. Yahoo or Gmail. Not only are you not only not using your own storage, you also get (some) protection from external virus protection. Don't be naive tho, these systems also have their own issues.
Your issue will more likely be $$$$ and you get what you invest. If you are into music go for a device with sufficient storage to store your music. I bought an Acer from Harvey Normans and am extremely happy with it. I do have issues with Windows 7 and the removal of "move" capabilities but then I have over 500gig of music at my finger tips. I'm also into photos (grandchildren) and videos, have carried this machine to 2 overseas countries and find it robust and portable. Great to download photos etc so you have copies in case you lose one option.

If your use to Windows the Apple MAc will annoy you until you get use to it. Trust me. If you have patience then you will love the Apple but until you will need time to adjust to their lingo.

As for storage there are portable USB devices you can use to store music, movies etc. It is best to always back up your stuff on an extrernal source regardless in case the PC has a problem or viruses hit the PC.

Buy a Laptop with nothing less than 4GB's memory you will be sweet.

That Whirlpool link above is a great site to compare laptops and get opinions.

Microsoft make Outlook, Word, Excel and PPt for Mac.

Apple make Mail, Pages, Numbers and Keynote - which all do the same job.

all programs are available for Mac. That's not the issue. they are a bit more expensive, but they are well made, reliable and are worry free when it comes to viruses.

But go into an apple story and play with an airbook to see if its for you.

I had a dell laptop for years.

Bought a mac 2 weeks ago and never looked back. Dick Smith had a sale, plus i snared it on interest free as well. They are dearer then PC alternatives with better specs, however they run so smooth and efficiently it is unbelievable. I bought a macbook pro pro 13" 2.4 or something lol.

Vaio has 2 GB and is 3-4 years old. Incredibly slow, does what it wants to. Outlook in particulary is slow. Try to open or send emails and the screen goes black. Internet is also slow. I primarily use for Outlook and internet. Wife needs it for accounting work. Dont know if it is cost effective to increase GB or indeed if it can be doene

Have you performed a clean install or some decent scans of late ?
Sometimes a decent cull of redundant programs and malware + virus scan can make a huge difference.

Generally RAM is a cheap upgrade. I purchased a new Asus in July to run Autocad and found that RAM upgrades could easily be done for less than $100 although I am aware that some Vaios require specific RAM.

What model is it ?

From what I found in a quick google search you that model accepts up to 2gig of RAM.

I would suggest going down the disk scan route with antivirus, malware and purging crap and see what if any difference that makes.
From memory Windows Vista only recognises/uses a maximum of either 2 or 3 gig, so if you are running Vista a RAM upgrade would make little difference.

It takes about 2 days to adjust. The OS is a bucketload better. With that said, you can buy a macbook pro and install windows on it if you want. In my experience, and I've gone through alot of laptops (work in IT), mac has by far the best build quality, it isn't even close.

As others have said, depends on budget and needs.
There are some hi-po ones available, Eurocom can knock you up one with 32gb of RAM if you want.
Shame SSD's aren't cheap yet.
