The Hobart Tigers have stunned the previously undefeated Launceston Warriors winning 58 to 6 in round 9 of the Balanced Book Keepers State Wide League Competition in Hobart on Saturday.

The Warriors had no answer to a ruthless Tigers outfit which saw Sid Fielea back to his very best running in three tries including a brilliant 70 metre dash where he eluded six would be defenders to score under the posts.

The Warriors sorely missed a number of big guns including Cliff Tupuo in the forward pack and will now need to lick their wounds and prepare for next weeks qualifying final against the Tigers in Launceston.

In the other match, the Rabbitohs held off a determined Eastern Thunder outfit to win 40 to 28 in an entertaining game.

Next Saturday the Tigers travel to Launceston to play the Warriors in the qualifying final while the Rabbitohs play the Thunder at University Oval in the elimination final.

The Hobart Tigers have marched through the State Wide Tasmanian Rugby League Grand Final defeating the Launceston Warriors 36-26 in Launceston Saturday.

In hot conditions, the Tigers hit the ground running stretching out to a 24 to 6 lead at the break. The Tigers forwards dominated the first half led by second rowers Beau Scott and Fua Pomana who both created plenty of opportunities for the rampant Tigers backline to run in four sparkling tries.

The Warriors regained their composure after half time outclassing the Tigers to bring the score to 30 to 26 to the Tigers with ten minutes left on the clock.

However, the Tigers bit back with a classy try to centre Polo Pua converted by Fale Atileo. The Warriors made crucial errors that cost them any chance of wining the game in the dying minutes and now face a sudden death game against the Southern Rabbitohs next Saturday at the University oval at 3pm.

The Warriors best players were hooker Isaac Anderson and pivot Robbie Lyon.

In the other game, the Southern Rabbitohs withstood a strong first half challenge by the Eastern Thunder to run out easy winners 52 to 6. Howie Hyland was outstanding at five eighth well supported by Zac Locke who is the stand out winder of the competition.

The Thunder were best served Wally Bird at fullback and retiring Club legend Chris Cavanagh.

Mate, I think you need to get the stewards in. Warriors kill everyone during the season and then get done over in the finals. What's the story?
Btw who was minor premier?

Warriors were minor premiers. Lost a couple of vital cogs for the finals and it was their first season.

The Southern Rabbitohs have marched to their third consecutive Grand Final in the State Wide Tasmanian Rugby League after defeating the minor premiers, the Launceston Warriors’ 38 to 22 on Saturday.

In perfect conditions at the University Rugby Oval, the Rabbitohs finished all over a brave Warriors unit who were in the game till the final ten minutes.

The Rabbitohs opened the game with a brilliant try after three minutes to young winger, Caden Salter, who placed himself perfectly to run onto a beautiful offload from Aaron Wale.

The Rabbitohs steamed ahead to a 12 nil lead before Warriors Captain, Isaac Anderson, burrowed over to bring the score back to a 12 to 6. Warriors prop, Nick Sotiriou, powered his way over for two tries and the Warriors looked to be heading to their first Grand Final.

Rabbitohs centre, Charlie Meni, threw the game wide open with a try after a strong run and the Warriors clung onto a 22 to 20 point lead with twenty minutes to go.

The game changer was a try after a powerful ten metre burst from man of the match, Aaron Wale, which saw the momentum fall the Rabbitohs way with ten minutes left on the clock. Two further tries sealed a memorable Rabbitohs victory. All eyes turn to the Grand Final next week between arch rivals, the Rabbitohs and Hobart Tigers at University Oval at 4pm.

Best for the Rabbitohs were Michael Lovell, Aaron Whale and Caden Salter. The Warriors best were Isaac Anderson, Harley Lyons and Nick Sotiriou.

Southern Rabbitohs 38 (J Stankowich 2, O Gearman, C Meni, A Wale, C Salter, M Lovell Tries J Stankowich 5 Goals) defeated Launceston Warriors 22 (N Sotiriou 2, I Anderson, I Doust Tries, E James 3 Goals)

This weekend the Tasmanian Rugby League celebrates its biggest day of the year when the Southern Rabbitohs take on the Hobart Tigers in the Grand Final at University Oval at 4pm.

The Rabbitohs have been the steady improvers of the season culminating in a brilliant win over the Launceston Warriors last weekend.

Meanwhile the Tigers had last weekend off and may have lost some momentum as a result.

Rabbitohs Coach, Jeff Tonks, has every reason to be happy with his Team as they are peaking just when it matters. The Rabbitohs game is built on grit and determination, with Howie Hyland the link between a solid forward pack and a back three who can score from anywhere on the park.

The Hobart Tigers are a well drilled unit whose strength lies in playing a structured game under Coach Mick Hunt. Mick is a cagey and knowledgeable Rugby League exponent and he will have a few tricks up his sleeve this weekend. Sunia Maafu will lead from the front and will be keen to put this one away for the Tigers.

Scott Dyson will be this weekend's Referee and he will assert his authority to ensure a clear ruck and an open game.

Good luck to all players and match officials this weekend from all of us at the Tasmanian Rugby League. You should be proud of yourselves for your achievements this year.

Enjoy YOUR Grand Final!

The Hobart Tigers have defeated the Southern Rabbitohs 40 to 30 in the Tasmanian Rugby League Grand Final played at the University Rugby Ground on Saturday.

In a game of big hits and enthralling attack, the two sides hammered each other till the last minute of the game when the Tigers sealed the match with a try to centre Ivan Meaclem.

The Rabbitohs took an early lead when man of the match, Kaden Salter, scored the first of his three tries in the third minute. From thereon, the first half was an arm wrestle with neither side able to gain a clear advantage.

The Tigers Coach, Mick Hunt, was clearly disappointed with his sides lack of discipline, which saw centre, Polo Pua, sin binned for a high tackle. Despite this, Tigers clung to a slender 8 to 4 lead at half time.

After the break, the warm conditions and the pressure took its toll and the game opened up. The sides traded tries with the Rabbitohs clinging desperately close to the Tigers score line but unable to take the lead.

A brilliant 50 metre bust by retiring Tigers second rower, Fua Pomana, gave the Tigers a 12 point lead with five minutes to go. However the Rabbitohs replied with a converted try to Salter setting up a grandstand finish with only two minutes left on the clock.

Meaclem’s try in the final minute of the game broke the hearts of the Rabbitohs supporters after a gritty performance from their side.

The Tigers best players were Captain, Sunnia Ma’afu, Sid Fielea and full back, Luke White. Salter was the Rabbitohs best with Captain, Jamon Stankovich also having an outstanding game.

The Tasmanian Rugby League season concludes on Saturday 16 March with a North versus South match to be played in Launceston at Royal Park.

Tigers 40 (Tries Sunnia Ma’afu, Josh White 2, Viliami Vea, Ivan Meaclem, Fua Pomana, Vaha Afa, Conversions Ivan Meaclem 4) Rabbitohs 30 (Tries Kaden Salter 3, Aaron Whale, Jamon Stankovich, Zac Locke, Coversions Jamon Stankovich 3)
