The All Black arrested in central Hamilton this morning is Sione Lauaki.
The 24-year-old Chiefs player faces one charge of common assault over an incident which took place outside a women's fashion store just before 5am on Victoria Street.
The site is also just across the road from the SkyCity Casino, which would have been the only venue open in central Hamilton at that time of the morning.
A 26-year-old man has made the allegation.
Lauaki was bailed by police following his arrest and he will appear in the Hamilton District Court next Thursday. It is the same day the Chiefs are due to play a warm up game against the Highlanders in Queenstown.
The incident followed a team building session run by the Chiefs yesterday afternoon.
Lauaki will be asked to provide his side of the story about the altercation in Victoria Street.
The Chiefs and NZRU say they will let the judicial process run its course before taking any action.
Chiefs CEO Gary Dawson says the player needs to go through the process first and then they and the NZRU will look at all the circumstances and take appropriate action, which could involve a whole range of options.
Ironically Sione Lauaki was drawn into an assault case last August, when an Auckland man with the same surname tried to claim he was related to the All Black to avoid his name being made public after he attacked a truck driver with a hammer in a notorious road rage incident.
At the time, Lauaki said he was outraged at being drawn into the case.
