Train on squad and some interesting tid bits....

http://www.rlef.eu.com/news/article/1142/lebanon-name-initial-squad-for

Lebanon RLF has announced an initial 48-man train-on squad for their two 2017 World Cup Qualifiers – MEA, against South Africa in Pretoria towards the end of the month. Robbie Farah, who made his international debut for the Cedars as an 18-year-old in Tripoli in 2002, and current New South Wales winger Josh Mansour are the headliners included, along with a host of established international players.

“The squad is coming together in what is shaping up to be a big challenge, playing the South Africans in their own backyard,” said LRLF director Michael Hedwan, who has been closely involved with the coaching staff assembling the squad. “It has been 15 years since the Cedars last played in a World Cup and the mixture of youth, experience and the strengthening of the local competition indicates Lebanese rugby league has a bright future ahead.”

Players like captain Chris Saab and Ray Moujali are some of the longest serving in international rugby league, having represented Lebanon since 2003, winning caps against Morocco, France and Serbia in the Mediterranean Cup and Russia, Ireland, Wales, Italy and Samoa in previous World Cup qualifiers.

Lebanon came agonizingly close to qualification in 2008 and 2013, losing out on points difference both times, but the feeling is that this could be their year. Interest in the sport in the country, despite the social and political difficulties on the ground, is higher than ever.

Major media networks LBCI, Future, Al Manar and MTV are all heavily covering the Cedars’ campaign and will be sending crews to South Africa, and the Lebanese ambassador there has been promoting the two-match series throughout the country’s sizeable Lebanese population.

Head coach Darren Maroon, in his second stint with the national side, will trim the squad to 20 to make the trip. Lebanon face South Africa on 25 and 31 October at the Bosman Stadium, Brakpan, just outside of Pretoria. The winner will be the first-ever Middle East Africa qualifier.

I remember marc glanville saying he could have played for lebanon himself so presumably his mother must be lebanese and therefore ryan's grandmother.

Final 20 man squad named. Only 3 locals made the cut sigh...

Don't have a link, was posted on the International Rugby League Facey page.

RECALLED ROBINSON BROTHERS HEADLINE STRONG LEBANON SQUAD
Parramatta Eels star Reece Robinson and his brother, Melbourne Storm three-quarter Travis, have been named by Lebanon coach Darren Maroon in the Cedars’ 20-man squad that will jet off to Pretoria on Monday to play in the sport’s first-ever Middle East Africa World Cup qualifier.

Both last played for Lebanon in 2009 and look set to be part of a speedy backline that also features Newtown full-back Daniel Abou-Sleiman and which will be guided by halves James Boustani and Mark Daoud.

Lebanon, which has missed out on the last two World Cups in 2008 and 2013 on points difference, is determined to replicate their presence at the 2000 tournament and Maroon will rely on a tried and tested forward pack, including the likes of veterans Chris Saab and Ray Moujalli.

The squad has been given a rousing message by Canterbury Bulldogs director Arthur Coorey, who was born in Kfarsghab, north Lebanon, and whose son Richard debuted for Lebanon in the front row against Malta in May.

“Play tough, hard and an uncompromising style of football,” said Coorey. “Remember that Lebanese men are gladiators, we play till the end. Play well and the doors of opportunity will open for you.”

I understand why Lebanon won't play any locals, at least all the players named havnt played and won't play for other countries. They have missed the two previous world cups by the smallest of margins, they won't be taking and chances this time. They should win comfortably!

Yep ...where a weird mob !

Sadly i can see SA having 40+ put on them due to the experience in the team representing Lebanon.

Hopefully it won't dent their enthusiasm or will to spread the game.

Another local added after Robinson's withdrawl...

RLWC facebook page

Lebanon has been forced to re-shuffle its squad following Reece Robinson’s withdrawal. The Parramatta Eel back is set to undertake a code switch to New South Wales Waratahs and made himself unavailable to the Lebanese Rugby League Federation.

Head coach Darren Maroon has replaced him with 19-year-old American University of Beirut back row Toufic El Hajj.

The Mount Lebanon native said, “I still remember the first day I saw a rugby league training session; I was immediately caught up in the magic of it all and ever since, it’s become such a massive part of my life.

“It has taught me and how it’s positively help change my life. I’m a better man today because of rugby league and being named a Cedar is the greatest and most humbling honour.”

That is the kind of attitude I love reading about. Fantastic quote.
