LeBron: "I'm coming home"

There's an offseason thread but Lebron is the 2014 offseason. And this little bit of news deserves its own thread:

Before anyone ever cared where I would play basketball, I was a kid from Northeast Ohio. It’s where I walked. It’s where I ran. It’s where I cried. It’s where I bled. It holds a special place in my heart. People there have seen me grow up. I sometimes feel like I’m their son. Their passion can be overwhelming. But it drives me. I want to give them hope when I can. I want to inspire them when I can. My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball. I didn’t realize that four years ago. I do now.

Remember when I was sitting up there at the Boys & Girls Club in 2010? I was thinking, This is really tough. I could feel it. I was leaving something I had spent a long time creating. If I had to do it all over again, I’d obviously do things differently, but I’d still have left. Miami, for me, has been almost like college for other kids. These past four years helped raise me into who I am. I became a better player and a better man. I learned from a franchise that had been where I wanted to go. I will always think of Miami as my second home. Without the experiences I had there, I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing today.

I went to Miami because of D-Wade and CB. We made sacrifices to keep UD. I loved becoming a big bro to Rio. I believed we could do something magical if we came together. And that’s exactly what we did! The hardest thing to leave is what I built with those guys. I’ve talked to some of them and will talk to others. Nothing will ever change what we accomplished. We are brothers for life. I also want to thank Micky Arison and Pat Riley for giving me an amazing four years.

I’m doing this essay because I want an opportunity to explain myself uninterrupted. I don’t want anyone thinking: He and Erik Spoelstra didn’t get along. … He and Riles didn’t get along. … The Heat couldn’t put the right team together. That’s absolutely not true.

I’m not having a press conference or a party. After this, it’s time to get to work.

When I left Cleveland, I was on a mission. I was seeking championships, and we won two. But Miami already knew that feeling. Our city hasn’t had that feeling in a long, long, long time. My goal is still to win as many titles as possible, no question. But what’s most important for me is bringing one trophy back to Northeast Ohio.

I always believed that I’d return to Cleveland and finish my career there. I just didn’t know when. After the season, free agency wasn’t even a thought. But I have two boys and my wife, Savannah, is pregnant with a girl. I started thinking about what it would be like to raise my family in my hometown. I looked at other teams, but I wasn’t going to leave Miami for anywhere except Cleveland. The more time passed, the more it felt right. This is what makes me happy.

To make the move I needed the support of my wife and my mom, who can be very tough. The letter from Dan Gilbert, the booing of the Cleveland fans, the jerseys being burned -- seeing all that was hard for them. My emotions were more mixed. It was easy to say, “OK, I don’t want to deal with these people ever again.” But then you think about the other side. What if I were a kid who looked up to an athlete, and that athlete made me want to do better in my own life, and then he left? How would I react? I’ve met with Dan, face-to-face, man-to-man. We’ve talked it out. Everybody makes mistakes. I’ve made mistakes as well. Who am I to hold a grudge?

I’m not promising a championship. I know how hard that is to deliver. We’re not ready right now. No way. Of course, I want to win next year, but I’m realistic. It will be a long process, much longer than it was in 2010. My patience will get tested. I know that. I’m going into a situation with a young team and a new coach. I will be the old head. But I get a thrill out of bringing a group together and helping them reach a place they didn’t know they could go. I see myself as a mentor now and I’m excited to lead some of these talented young guys. I think I can help Kyrie Irving become one of the best point guards in our league. I think I can help elevate Tristan Thompson and Dion Waiters. And I can’t wait to reunite with Anderson Varejao, one of my favorite teammates.

But this is not about the roster or the organization. I feel my calling here goes above basketball. I have a responsibility to lead, in more ways than one, and I take that very seriously. My presence can make a difference in Miami, but I think it can mean more where I’m from. I want kids in Northeast Ohio, like the hundreds of Akron third-graders I sponsor through my foundation, to realize that there’s no better place to grow up. Maybe some of them will come home after college and start a family or open a business. That would make me smile. Our community, which has struggled so much, needs all the talent it can get.

In Northeast Ohio, nothing is given. Everything is earned. You work for what you have.

I’m ready to accept the challenge. I’m coming home.

P.S. If he gave us the 2010 version of this when he left instead of "The Decision" he'd be almost unanimously loved.

He has a great speechwriter.

I wonder how those fans who burnt their jerseys feel now.

What a story... Instant contenders in the East.

I can't wait to see what the Cavs build around him and Kyrie with all the young assets they have...

They could trade wiggins for love... They could trade Bennett for something...

They also have something like 4 first round picks for next years draft... I reckon Love will be a Cav.

Also.... Good to see the Heat handling it with class...

Rebel Sports are gonna be pissed they have to throw out all those Miami James jerseys, & buy thousands of Cav James jerseys.

Well the heat fan base just halved lol and I guess the Cavs fan base is about to double lol especially if the land Kevin Love. Which is what a lot of people are saying might happen.

This is so awesome.

Mad respect for LeBron in going home. This will solidify his legacy.

While a Bulls fan, I wouldn't actually mind Cleveland winning...poor bastards haven't won shit for 50 years.

The big question I have... If your Lebron...

Do you look at the short term and trade Wiggins for Love... In order to be a true contender right now...

Or do you take short term growing pains to help Wiggins develop in to something we're all hoping he can be.

If I was Lebron... I'd consider keeping those young assets and developing them in to something could be a dynasty for the next decade.

People have been analysing The Letter like detectives all over the net. As well as mentioning Kyrie he also specifically mentions Thompson, Waiters and Varejao. But he doesn't mention the 2014 number one overall draft pick his new team just landed. Or the 2013 number one for that matter.

Sports Center says the Cavs have offered Waiters, Bennett and a 1st round pick. Perhaps they try to make that happen knowing the Twolves probably have to trade him at some point and that's a decent package. Question mark is if the Twolves dig in, do the Cavs go to Wiggins.

IMHO Kevin Love is still young. He is a top 10 player in the league, which is what Wiggins might be one day. And Kevin Love's skillset goes perfectly with Lebron's. A big man that is an elite shooter AND elite rebounder. As a Lebron fan if I could pick one player in the league to pair with Lebron, it would be KL.

I don't think LBJ wants to wait around for Wiggins to develop. He would want immediate results (as would Cleveland!) so if its a KL for Wiggins trade, I'd say LBJ pulls the trigger.

LBJ, Kyrie & Love as the big 3... that would be mouth watering....

Kyrie and Kevin are both better running mates than Wade and Bosh even in their primes.

Kyrie is a better shooter from 3 than Wade is. KL is a better rebounder and better shooter than Bosh. Yes Kyrie might not be quite the same overall scorer as Wade in his prime and KL might not be as good at defending as Bosh. But overall I think their strengths compliment Lebron better than Wade and Bosh.

Yeah... I can see what you guys are saying...

And I think you guys are spot on... That's what I see as well...

But I just look at Wiggins... And while I don't see lebron... I see a Kobe, Camelo, Wade type talent who will be a franchise guy for whoever he goes to...

If I'm the Cavs... I do everything In my power to bring in Love... But by keeping Wiggins.

Maybe Lebron and Kyrie need to have a word with Love... And just tell him to give the wolves the word... And say either they get the deal done with the Cavs or he goes there for free next year.

They are indeed playing hardball... But at the end of the day... He walks for nothing if they can't get anything done...

For better and worse, Cleveland fans are more passionate than Miami fans. Cleveland home games will be electric now. Even more so than Lebron's last stay because back then it was Lebron who had never won anything surrounded by a bunch of mediocre players.

Now it's Lebron the 2 time champion with multiple young talented players. If they get Love they could have 3 All star starters in their team. They become the glamour team. A town without any sporting success for 50 years is going to get behind them big time.

The funniest thing about all this is I'm pretty sure Miami still owe Cleveland some future 1st round picks from the Lebron S&T in 2010.
