Well done to both sides. Leeds can only play the team that's in front of them and they did that well. Particularly encouraging was their desperation in defence when threatened. The dogs rookies looked over-awed for most of the game but came home with a wet sail.

I think the player Canterbury missed more than any other was Sherwin. Hughes offered nothing at half though Oliver looked a better option late in the game.

Ryan Bailey's just a bully, loves using that forearm to the head of the tackled player on the ground to show how tough he is  I wish refs would penalise that as a breach of the spirit of the game. Reni Matua looked every bit a thug, *edit - defamation*.

Good summary that, would have to agree about Bailey and Matuia, but the ref did let them get away with it. Hampstead should have cracked down early on all the cheap shots out there (but it did make for an emotional game which is always more exiciting)

As you said Leeds can only play the team in front of them and they were better on the night. Well done to them and if all goes well we might get another crack at them same time next year.

I'd never noticed in Matua's game before when he was a junior player. I think he got carried away with the emotion of the game and we saw the results.

unforunately we lost, but the youngesters tried hard. Well done to leeds they played well enough im sure their coach wouldnt be that happy about the defense but they won thats all that counts.
nothing wrong with a little passion and biff in the game

BRing on rugby league u just have to love this game of ours

well done to the young dogs side for not lying down in the second half and making some sort of game of it.

why can't we have 2 games with the team having the better for and against wins the WCC, obviously the other game should be played here.

Matuia was pathetic, he just gave away a few penalties and that was it.

Hampstead had a bit of a shocker, nearly every kick off the players were off side. Also is the stripping rule still that its a two man tackle if there were two men in the tackle at any time, not just when they strip the ball? If it is then Hampstead got them wrong I think.

I think Leeds could have won by more but they really just slacked off after half-time. Good on the Bulldogs for coming back though.

Sucked in to the dogs as they pretend to make it as a nothing game but get so upset about losing that they try to make some cheap shots. Typical dogs

Everyone knows the players personally though, Cammo. So they know what was going to happen. Typical wankers.

Yeah, i'm with Tigerpies and Matt M, Matuia was just pathetic, he wasen't that bad last season was he??? It's amazing what a premiership does to some players. Even Sonny was fired up after he dropped that ball late in the game and started swinging at bailey, there was no need.

Hampstead had a shocker aswell, He's partly the reason why the game was out of control in some parts. It starred when Danny McGuire was taken high at the start of the game and also Mathers was Chev Walker was tackled without the ball. Had there not been a flair-up, Hughes would not have been penalised for for the high tackle.

Well played by Leeds, good scrambling defence when on their own line under pressure, and they did well to hold on in the end.

This has got me so excited for the 2005 NRL and ESL seasons.

   Leeds Rhinos: 2005 WCC Champions.

BTW, Ozzy, it's time to change dat avater mate.

Agreed with nqboy's summary.

I was impressed with Leed's first half, but I must say that I expected better of them for the full 80 minutes, unlike what we usually see from any English side, be it at club or international level.

The Rhinos had a good preparation and were playing an inexperienced and under-prepared outfit, and the way they just fell away after getting a solid lead was dissapointing. I'm taking nothing away from some good Bulldogs play, but Leeds just totally lost the plot at the same time.

Leeds have really dominated the English comp, and if that's the best England has to offer then I might just hold back a touch in future when I comment on how the standard of British Rugby League is on the improve.

That's just my opinion anyway.

Cheers

Maybe some should have put digital on and listened to the ref's microphone. Anyone here what Bailey said to Sonny Bill that caused him to have a swing? :O

Well, I just got back from Homebush (Novatel), where I watched the game on the big screen for the Bulldogs Tsunami Appeal. Over 800 tickets were pre-sold, we were some of the many walk-ups. I was surprised at how many Bulldogs supporters were out there. The place was full, standing room only left.

There was a good vibe, despite the score in the first half. The NRL premiership trophy was there for photos, and Utai, Sherwin, Shrek, and Ben Harris were all there.

Well done to the Rhinos. They blew us off the park in the first half. The second half was very encouraging though as our young guys started to click. We may just have got there in the end if a couple of uncharacteristic brain explosions didn't occur. But it wasn't to be.

I would have liked to have seen fewer cheap shots, but the scene was set early on when Bailey decided to employ his forearm. The Dogs didn't have to respond though. At least it showed they were playing with spirit rather than treat it as a mickey mouse game as many have accused them of. Hampstead should have cracked down earlier, but I guess he's as rusty as the players at this time of year.

All in all, it was an exciting match with some brilliant tries, and some big defensive shots.

Welcome back Rugby League.

I TOTALLY AGREE. THEY PLAYED CRAP. ONLY THE ROOSTERS CAN BECOME THE WORLD CHAMPIONS WITH A HUGE LEAD OF 38NIL.
THE BULLDOGS PLAYED DIRTY IN THE GAME. I HAVE NEVER WATCHED A GAME WHERE SO MANY FIGHTS BROKE OUT AND SO MANY CHEAP SHOTS CAME WHEN THEY KNEW THEY WERE GOING TO LOSE.
SUCKED IN DOGS. I GUESS DOGS ARE KNOWN TO BE DIRTY :!: \\:D/

The Roosters couldn't even get there this year. How does that make you feel?

Leeds hold out Bulldogs

5 February 2005

The Bulldogs have just fallen short after staging a remarkable comeback from 26 points down to lose 39-32 to English champion Leeds in rugby league's World Club Challenge tonight.

Leeds led 38-12 early in the second half but four quick tries from the Canterbury side shrunk the margin to only 38-32 with eight minutes left.

A field goal from Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield in the 78th minute put a stunning win out of the Bulldogs' reach.

Leeds continued Britain's dominance of the inter hemisphere challenge, with the British champions winning eight of the 12 matches since 1987.

After running in five first half tries to one to take a 26-6 lead into the break, Leeds looked unstoppable but the Bulldogs showed a hint of a comeback when fullback Luke Patten scored three minutes into the second half to make it 26-12.

But huge decisive blunders by Patten and Hazem El Masri handed the Rhinos two tries in the space of a couple of minutes and their 38-12 lead.

Minutes after his try, Patten waited for a Sinfield grubber in his in goal but was beaten by the bounce and Richie Mathers pounced to score.

El Masri was then caught in goal by the aggressive chasing of the Leeds defence, evaded one tackle, tried to pass in another but put the ball to ground for Jamie Jones-Buchanan to fall on it for Leeds' seventh try.

Winger El Masri then sparked the Bulldogs revival when he barged over for his second try, quickly followed by a pair from Jamaal Lolesi and one from skipper Tony Grimaldi to set up an exciting finish.

But Sinfield, who directed a dominant Leeds display for most of the match, saw justice was done with his winning field goal.

Sinfield finished with five conversions and field goal, while El Masri landed four conversions.
