In all honesty, how many teams do we seriouusly think can take the cup this time around?

I say there are 5 genuine contendors and 2 dark horses.

My prediction

1-England
2-New Zealand
3-Australia
4-France
5-South Africa

And my 2 dark horses

6-Ireland
7-Scotland

No other team can win, imho.

From sports TAB - the odds for the winner are

New Zealand $2.40
England $2.70
Australia $5.00

France $14.00
South Africa $26.00

Ireland $51.00
Argentina $81.00

The other 13 teams are over $200 - 9 of those are paying over $1000

The dark horse Scotland mentioned is paying $200

So it seems punters believe there are 3 genuine chances and 2 others with an outside chance

Scotland should be better odds than that seeing they're almost certainly going to make the quarter finals, they have a much easier task than Argentina anyway so the difference in those team's odds is suprising. Argentina though are a much better side than Scotland, it would be a great positive for rugby if they did well but it looks unlikely seeing they're in the group of death. :(

Don't know what's happened to Ireland's price - we were $31 a few weeks ago and haven't had much bad news apart from Geordan Murphy's injury as far as I know.

I'm surprised France are so short - we beat them in the 6N this year, and they have also gone down to the Argies twice this year. They beat England (just) with a near full strength side against half an England side, and lost heavily when it was the other way around.

I suppose their reputation for upsets precedes them.

Still 3,000 seats for the opening ceremony and game. What a joke!!

I guess people don't want to fall asleep on a Friday night.

It is an 80,000 seat stadium.

There were 10,000 left a week out from the NRL G/F.

Didnt they just release those 3,000 tickets in the last few days ?

And how many full stadiums did we see at Leagues WC ? let alone half full ? let alone any one turning up ?

I think you are reaching for straws iggy.

How much would you bet on them?

People like to talk up the chances of these teams - but the bookies show closer to the truth

However, no game has been played yet so if Scotland can win their pool I'm sure their price will come in

Interesting reading is the head to head games in the first round. A few teams are paying $1.01 for the win

13,000 tickets were released for the fans of the teams involved in the g.f on the monday after the prelim finals. All were snapped up in matter of hours.

Laugh all you like about the league world cup, but league is mainly domestic. This world cup is the big thing for yawnion and it still couldn't sell-out the opening ceremony despite the hype.

I have never seen more air time and paper space devoted to a sport in my life. You'd think rugby was huge in all the countries competing, but it is in only about 6       . Even half of australia couldn't give a shit!!

actually rugby is only the main sport in 2 main counties. Wales and New Zealand

And please don't say South Africa - most of their pop prefers soccer.

If that is the case then they are doing darn well considering that league is only big in Aus, PNG, some parts of Eng and they could full half a stadium

I think there are 4 teams that can win it

Eng
NZ
Aus
Fra

Dark house

either

Ireland
Arg

Would be a huge boil over if Aus lost to both Arg and Ireland cant see it happening but it has to be the toughest pool.

iggyplop, it's also number 1 in Tonga, Fiji, Samoa (and some other smaller P.I) and Georgia.

And it's a close 2nd in South Africa.

1- england
2-oz
3-nz
4-wales
5-s africa
6-france

watch out for
samoa
fiji

Samoa - 750/1
Fiji - 200/1
Wales - 200/1

If any of those sides looked like winnning it would be a MAJOR surprise - they would be happy with quarter finals.

Also Samoa and Fiji have some of their better players unavailable due to recently "retiring" fro international RU (for other reasons than due to pressure from their clubs of course)

And i'd love to see Argentina do well, (don't know why just seem to like them at sporting events).

The only tickets left are the $315 ones. Bloody expensive!

5 sides can realistically win it.

1. Australia
2. France
3. NZ
4. SA
5. England

Outside shots are Argentina and Ireland.
