I've yet to hear a rational coherent reason for why that would be the case, or any change is needed?

OK, how many of us identify with the union jack? And ffs why ?
when you think of NZ do you associate it with the silver fern/kiwi/koru ?
At major sporting events how many NZ flags do you see compared to the fern ?
I think for a lot of you namby pambies, the union jack is more of a security blanket than a flag.. it has no place in our social culture now.

I'd be more than happy if we told hrh where she could shove her commonwealth. ..

check the dictionary for rational and coherent...

I associate the silver fern with sport, the koru with Air New Zealand - and there's no kiwi option...

Lot of puffery over nothing, I suspect the majority are content with the status quo

I don't particularly like the current flag but the country could spend the $23 million a lot more productively than choosing a new one. The whole thing is a big distraction from the real issues. Plus the final four are shite.

That seems to be a real bugbear - our flag is similar to Austraya's... FFS, so what, so stupid or uninformed people can't discriminate them, I can, and am proud of our flag and history - these options are appalling.

The problem is that the four options presented are all terrible.

Exactly right vvvrulz. There were some other much better options to choose from that didn't make the top 4. The unfortunate truth is that the committee choosing the final flags were by no means qualified to make that choice. So we're left with three almost identical boring flags, and an even shittier one as the fourth. I just hope the split vote between the two different colour options of the same flag doesn't ruin the outcome.

Had they made good selections I would have been 100% supporting a flag change. But if these are the choice I don't really give a f**k. They screwed this chance up so badly.

The British flag even found itself a prominent position on a Warriors jersey.

History...

Only problem with the current flag is no Maori presence imo, only the Koru of the 4 has that, and that's all it has, and nobody likes it

I'd be shocked if there was any change, given the poor designs that have emerged as alternatives - lot of money that was better spent elsewhere imo

Saw someone post this on Facebook, at first glance the design seemed a bit ho hum (can't recall if it stood out when I saw the 40 shortlisted), but reading about the reasons behind the flag it's starting to kinda warm on me. Not that it matters now.

That's a flag I like enough to vote for. Simple. The rest? I just don't care. Looking at those final 4, I'd rather just take the Union Jack out of the current flag and leave it at that.. it's what this little exercise is all about anyway.

Couldn't say it better than this.

And I've recently decided that the silver should stay as a sporting symbol; it looks f**ken stupid on a flag. While the silver fern is endemic to NZ about a gazillion other countries have ferns that are almost exactly the same. Hey we are the fern country woop woop f**ken wippity woop.

This whole exercise is cringe worthy.

Remember when Paul Henry was asking John Key whether the next Gov-Gen would 'be a New Zealander and look like a New Zealander'?

That sort of attitude, no matter how wide spread, can't be helped by the fact the British flag is displayed so prominantly on the national flag.

Paul Henry isn't the best example though, he's a shock journalist muppet
