My concern is that you can't win every game by absolutely blowing the opposition away through the middle. Because you'll come across other teams with a great forward pack and eventually our forwards might feel the effects.

A dangerous backline (from 1-5) is usually essential to be a real contender.

The team will have to deal with this I think. I look forward to seeing what happens against the Eels.

Good post mate and absolutely agree. Premiership calibre teams need to have weapons all over the park and most importantly key players that can steer the ship.

The Dogs have proven that having a monster forward pack and a great coach won't cut it. They have the worse spine in the comp and good defences will shut them down most weeks. It's been our problem for a lot of years as well.

Our forwards lived up to expectations, we have an excellent pack, best in a long time. But added to that, Duges and Widdop were firing against Penrith and when your gun players fire, others follow. This has been missing for a long time.

Having good forwards won't win us a comp. We need much much more, but the foundations are definitely there, particularly with a star half coming next year.

Geez, roosters look good. Imagine dragons had pearce and keary as our halves. And their forwards and backs aren't bad either.
Good thread title, lets not get ahead of ourselves....
If the Dragons forwards can continue dominating games, our halves would be just as effective especially in 2018 when Hunt arrives. We need to inject speed into our outside backs. Players who could make a positive difference in the backline are:
Dufty at fullback
Field in the halves
Mann on left wing
Milne at left centre
Dugan at right centre

Aitken on the bench

I think pearce and keary are next level. They were incredible last night. I am not sure that mccrone and widdop are capable of producing performances like that.
Mann seems like missing out with Macdonald and nightingale secure in the wing positions.
Milne should be in the team in place of lafai.
I hope dufty makes it but I worry about his defense.
Field looks like making it.

I can't believe people are calling for changes. I know Mann and Milne are better options than Lafai but the fact Saints blew Penrith off the park Lafai deserves to stay there. I am sure Mann will get his chance sooner than people think. If Saints played poorly fair enough.

What really impressed me most about the game and something Saints have not done in many many years is they got a 2 try lead and went on with it. Not just sat back and defended the lead. That to me was the biggest improvement by a mile. That use to $hite me to tears big time.

I'm overseas and only just got to watch the game today and it was a joy to behold....mostly.
Our forwards were awesome, just outstanding. They weren't our problem last year and certainly won't let us down this year and just think we have big Mose and Leilua to come in when ready. McInnes looks great for us...how long have we waited. Widdop, McCrone and Dugan all played much better than I thought they would, I'm so happy to see it finally.

But....and I don't want to sound ungrateful or unappreciative of the boy's efforts but we did make a few errors ( expected first round I guess ) and our centres, while fairly solid, could be replaced to make us an even better side. Lafai was given a beautiful ball for a break but he had no idea what to do with it, didn't look for support or a pass or kick, took the tackle. Aitken, while outstanding in defence and some good runs, once again raced up out the line for no good reason and gifted the Panthers a try. I know I probably sound unreasonable but I can only wonder how much better we'd be with Milne and Mann out there. I haven't read any posts on the game in here yet but I'm sure there'll be one or two in the same vein.

Apart from that though, what a great game it was to watch, what a scoreline. Go you good things.

Edit : haha, I scroll up just one post and a Milne and Mann change is the subject.

Nailed it kitt.

Pretty much my whole week of posting right there!

The sooner Milne comes in for Lafai the better he gets to prove he can play on the left just like last year.

Only better with the more experience.

Let's stop dicken around here and pick the best natural centre prospect in the club, in the top grade.

Last chance saloon for Lafai me thinks.

Milne is a beast!

SlipperyMorris , Kit66 and Dragsters , each have made excellent points , however lets continue with Lafai for this match and as both Kit66 & Dragsters have said , there's always Milne to be thrown in should he , Lafai , not perform .

I also would like Milnes big frame there , as should the halves be able to feed some decent ball to the backline , he would be the one to cause the most damage . Still very early days , so I am sure that Milne will be the first cab of the rank , should either Lafai or Atkins not live up to expectations .

While ever Mary wants to stick with Dugan as fullback, it should be Milne at right centre, Mann at left centre.

Penrith were just really bad last week not us been good
We showed with parramatta that things have not changed from 2016
Dragons are disgraceful
Keep up the good work mary
Another flogging this week from the sharks will get the ball rolling for again for Mary to be sacked
