LGF+ SPB = Poor showing by halves

Lack of go forward (LGF) and our slow play the balls (SPB) is the reason our halves played so badly yesterday.

Our forwards got smashed yesterday. We hardly made the advantage line. Even our best forward Skando got smashed everytime he carried the ball forward. The only time we seem to make ground was when Mears darted out from dummy half or when Laffranchi took the ball up wide of the ruck, but even this wasnt enough.

Our play the balls were so slow. We got dominated in nearly every tackle. We took an eternity to get up and play the ball.

If our halves, whoever they may be, dont have room and time to work in they will struggle everytime. Our kicking game will be affected and the halves will take poor options as they will be under pressure everytime.

Without eating the metres and quick play the balls the halves will always struggle. I dont really think if we had any other player there yesterday it would of made any difference. We could of had Johns and still got smashed.

The difference between a good half and an average one is that a good half will get his forwards going forward. Kimmorely and Johns both organise their forwards brilliantly. The problem is that some people on this forum dont realise the huge role that a good halfback has in this. It is for this reason that Prince will never be a great halfback. Even if they arent your captain a good halfback will still be your captain if you get my drift

In regard to your comment about Johns that is rubbish. It is no coincidence that Matt Parson went from being a below average front rower with Souths to being a very good one with Newcastle. With Johns in this side players like Skando and Laffranchi would be repping

Agreed, we allowed them to play it so quicky yet we couldnt play it quickly, to be fair though, Hampstead could've penalised them any number of times for slowing the play the ball down.

AS for the go forward, im sure we all noticed saints, at the play the ball there would be 2-3 fowards within a metre of the play the ball ready to cart it up, that makes a big difference.

forwards running hard in attack and muscling up in defense is the resposibility of the forwards. we were on the backfoot all day, and I agree with gr81, the half wouldn't have mattered. You can claim johns would make skando run faster but I'd say johns would be put out of a match if he was put in the match yesterday. I think rather then underestimating the role of halfback, I simply respect how essential the contribution of the forward pack is. They didn't do anywhere near enough yesterday to allow our backs space. Changing the halfback is not the solution to yesterdays problems and it is a silly thing to argue for considering how badly our forwards were dominated yesterday. No one can perform behind a pack doing nothing, and I don't agree that a half can change the go forward of a forward pack. If you go back to the bulldogs game where kerr played, I thought our forwards were at the very least equalled by a bulldogs pack lacking most of their star players, that shows our pack needs to lift if we are to be conteders in the top 8. We haven't matched it with any in form forward pack.

What your saying is partly true, but believe me,a good organising half who can keep the defence in two minds goes a long way to helping the forwards get over the advantage line. That inturn speeds up the play the ball!
