Liverpool handed UCL spot
PA Sport

Liverpool will be allowed to defend their Champions League crown next season.

UEFA's 14-man executive committee on Friday decided to make a special case to allow the Reds into the first qualifying round of the competition next season.

It means Liverpool will have to play six matches in order to qualify for the group phase and it could interfere with their pre-season tour of Japan.

Liverpool, who failed to finish in a qualifying place in the Barclays Premiership, will become the fifth English side in the competition.

UEFA have also taken steps to ensure that the same scenario never occurs again by changing the rules so that in the future the title-holders will always qualify for the competition the following season.

If the Liverpool situation occurs again and the European champions fail to finish in a qualifying place in their domestic competition however they will come in at the expense of the fourth-placed side.

The rules will also apply for countries who only get three or two Champions League spots, but there will be a special exemption in the unlikely event of a country with one Champion League spot winning the competition but failing to win their own domestic league.

What a sensible result. It is mind boggling that they didn't have a clause in their in the first place about the champions automatically qualifying.
In the end they got the right result.:D:D:D

Reds to Defend in 2006.

They didn't get automatic qualification - they start at the very first round of the pre-season qualifying comp.

Definitely the right decision, especially in giving the champions an automatic qualifying spot.

Also, Liverpool will have no country protection.
This means that they could face Man United or Everton in the final qualifying round

Bring on Everton, thats almost as good as an exemption from qualifying.

if liverpool arnt consistent enough to finish in the top 4 then they shouldnt have the right to qualify

The only reason Liverpool didn't finish in the top 4 is because we had a little cup competition called the European Chamopions League to concentrate on. I know United are happy with getting through the group stages but us Liverpool fans have a passion for Silverwear, if you remember what that looks like. It must really hurt United fans that with all that money and dominance in the domestic Competition over the last 14 years that they could only fluke one European Cup when Bayern Munich choked and handed it to them.

you know what sounded better though. liverpool fans saying "European Champions".

what happened in the premier league is over now, because we won the greatest club competition in europe, and still get to defend our trophy.

Everton didn't exactly set the world alight in the second half of the season when Gravesen left, the only reason you stayed up there was because you had such a good first half of the season.

Who needs excuses sunshine. We have a big fat shining trophy in our cabinet called the European Cup and we are still in the ECL. Couldn't give a rats ar*e about 4th place.
