First Labor pledged $3mil, now the Liberals have pledged $8mil

regardless of who wins, Leichhardt Oval will (assuming pledges are kept) be getting an upgrade, with the latter being enough to see a fulltime return by the Wests Tigers.

Lets assume that the Liberals win and $8mil is spent on the oval. Its not enough to get it to Stage 3 of the Development Plan, but it would be more than enough to get it past Stage 2 - the critical level at which point Noyce's argument that games must be played at Tel$ta goes merrily out the window.

I wonder what would happen then.
and i wonder what more excuses the club will come up with to not play there.

either way, we seem to be one big step closer to finding out where management's true colours lie.

in summary from the report:

That Council seeks special purpose grants from the State and Federal
Governments to fund the proposed $5 million improvement program for
Leichhardt Oval – stages 1 and 2 as detailed in the GHD options report of
October 2004 providing for a modern sporting ground meeting contemporary
standards, fully managed by Council and available for broad community use
including schools, community events and various sporting clubs including the
Balmain/Wests Tigers.

Basic Refurbishment Works (Stage 1) - $2.45 million
GHD undertook detailed asset condition surveys of the existing
facilities/structures to identify the extent and cost of works to meet Building
Code of Australia (BCA) and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S)
requirements. The report states that the ground and its facilities are in
average condition for their age, are generally structurally sound however the
various fittings and finishes require upgrading or replacement.
Essentially the problem is old infrastructure attempting to meet modern day
demands.
Page 4
Basic refurbishment amounting to $2.45 million is needed for the main
grandstand, ground and surrounds, toilet blocks, security, power, lighting
emergency signage and other essential ground areas. Whilst access to some
areas eg toilets, spectator areas etc would be improved, the top of the main
grandstand area would remain inaccessible under this scenario.
Major costs include approx. $1.0 million for the main grandstand
improvements including food and beverage outlets, $399,000 for upgraded
electricity distribution requirements, $266,000 for floodlighting and emergency
lighting maintenance, $168,000 for basic playing field renovation and
$105,000 for general ground safety. An up front allowance of $50,000 has
been made for electronic turnstiles due to current security problems with the
old system.
Under this scenario and with the continued use by Wests Tigers, they would
need to supplement the facilities with a hired electronic scoreboard and extra
lighting for night games. A temporary demountable toilet block will also be
required at the northern end of the ground to replace the closed underground
toilets.
Ground Improvement Program (Stages 1 and 2) - $4.9 million total
In addition to the basic refurbishment option, GHD looked at the scenario
where the ground remains as a valuable community sporting asset, not only
meeting the NRL standards for lighting, electronic scoreboards and the like
but also providing a modern, well presented and fully accessible sporting
facility for broad community use.
An extra $2.45 million to the basic refurbishment option is anticipated for
replacement of the old timber seating, a new security fence around the entire
site, a lift for the main grandstand, upgrading of the old corporate boxes, an
electronic scoreboard, lighting to NRL standards etc.
This is the recommended improvement option at this stage, essentially
representing a 2 year improvement program at a cost of $2.5 million each
year.

now stage 1 is either complete or in the process of being completed whilst parts or stage 2 are already complete using previous funds. THe lights have been upgraded and Mary St stand is gone.

Any extra funding would probably go towards achieving SOME of the goals set out in stage 3 and 4:
Redevelopment options to rear of main grandstand and Mary St area
(Stages 3 and 4) – extra $7.3 million
This option provides for $0.5 million for major playing field reconstruction (as
distinct from renovation in stage 1). This work may need to be brought forward
to stage 2 if, for example, significant revenue opportunities through NSL club
soccer or the like arose.
The balance of the work in this scenario incorporates redevelopment
opportunities at the back of the main grandstand ($2.8 million) and in the Mary
St area currently occupied by the old timber grandstands ($4 million).

i had a much more detailed report somewhere, including plans and stuff, but i can't find it
basically stage 3/4 called for a new stand at the Mary St entrance (not large...), offices and a new stand on the hill to replace the scoreboard. Also included knocking down the Glenn Morrison toilets and building a new modern facility beneath the new stand on the hill (which if you look at it from the camera point of view, would be completely out of view due to it being beyond the peak of the hill.

can't say i agree with all of the plans, but even a $3mil injection would really bring the ground up to scratch!

Noyce will whore home games out next season to Hindmarsh Stadium and Bukit Jalil in KL. Like it's not a tall enough mountain to climb with pivotal roles for Sheens, Simmons, Ronald and Morris

so how come leichhardt can finally get funding for an upgrade but campbelltown (which provides for a much larger area) can't get a cent?

It sounds to me there may be some goings on in WT Management that maybe we should be let in on.

I don't hear much sydney news up here in the oven, i mean queensland

i was of the impression there was a stalemate between the government (providing funding only if WT play more games at Campbelltown) and WT Management (We can't play mroe games there because the ground needs to be fixed up)
