Nigel chases Plum role
by Claire Killeen
Wagga Wagga Daily Advertiser

Former Wagga star lock Nigel Plum considers he was fortunate to make the move to Sydney 18 months ago, to chase a dream of playing in the National Rugby League premiership.

Although he struggles with certain aspects of city life, the 21-year-old concedes there are sacrifices he must take to achieve his ambition.

Those including working long days from 7am as a full-time plasterer before training with Western Suburbs Magpies at night.

"There are sacrifices you have to make," Plum said.

"I love playing football and at the moment I have to combine the two...and it is working."

A Group Nine premiership winner with (Wagga) Kangaroos as a raw boned teenager in 2001, Plum has adapted to city life.

"I live in Campbelltown and it isn't much different to Wagga," Plum said.

"It's when you go in closer to the city that you hit the rat race."

"The reason I came up here was to play first grade football, so even if the days are long I just have to do it."

With a goal to play first grade with Wests Tigers at some stage this year, Plum has to contend with Scott Sattler as the number one lock and realises he must wait in line.

"I just have to keep on playing good football," he said.

"There is not a lot else I can do. I have learnt a lot from Michael Buettner and a couple of the other guys. Those guys taught me a lot about the mental side of things."

"So when my time comes I just have to make the most of it."

Plum said he struggled earlier in the season with his form but now has settled into the groove.

The Magpies currently sit eleventh on the ladder and will face Newtown Jets at Henson Park.

"We are not going well at the moment," Plum said.

"But there is still a long way to go in the season. I was not happy with my form earlier in the season but now I'm going okay.

"I have been playing lock for the last three weeks but prior to that I had been in the second row.

"I play the same game no matter where I play, basically it is just defence based."

Nige can tackle like a truck, but there is more to his game than that.

Nige's love of the tucker might be a recurring joke, but I've gotta tell this one.

After our home games we go back to the City Hotel for a nosh. Usually it's a smorgasboard, but after the Sharkies game it was T-bones (and bloody big ones at that) with veges. Nige sat down next to me and proceeded to inhale three complete meals. It's awesome to watch Plummy on the fang. Just don't get your fingers too close to his mouth. ;-)

He's my cousin, and us country boys know how to eat when we have too. He is a totally different player defensively now than when he was running around for the roos back home. His defence was nowhere near as strong as it is now, but that was due to technique. Now he would take on a mack truck and win!

He was highly respected in group nine but at the same time, was kind of under rated in my opinion.

mate he's a good guy. We like him heaps at the Maggies. I'm not a bad eater, but I tell you what I feel kinda inadequate sitting next to Plummy.

You're right about his technique. Front on he just opens up a can of hurt. Runners bend in the middle like they've been smashed in the guts with a baseball bat. He still has problems with guys that can move laterally though.

I'd also like to see him get more involved in the hit ups. He's big enough and he should be looking to make one every set. I think he's more suited to the workhorse role than anything else. He's the kind of guy who could make 20 hit ups and 30 tackles a game whereas I'd be surprised if he was making more than 10 atm. He's going good, but he needs to crank it up to this sort of level to make Sheens give him a run.

He was a very wide running lock from memory when he was in group nine. He reminded me a lot of Menzies in his earlier years.

Yeah he used to do a bit of that last year, but NRL is a pretty big step up from group 9. He doesn't seem to have the pace for mine to play that game. What he does have though is hardness. He's big, he's hard, and likes to get his hands dirty. If he can get his workrate up he'll make a super second rower. Guys like Fulton, Harrison and Galea will always keep him out of the 13 for the Tigers.

My wife is a Wagga Wagga girl and when I was down their visiting a couple of years ago,I heard big wraps about Nigel. When I heard he`d signed with the Magpies I went to a local game and had a look at him play.Even back then you could see plenty of raw ability in him,but he didn`t involve himself in the game as much as he should of.However i`ve kept a close eye on him since he`s been playing for the Magpies and noticed a gradual improvement in his game.Last night against Parra he was awesome. He combimbed brilliantly with Kenny Mcguiness down the left hand side making numerous breaks and damaging runs.He was hitting like a hammer in every tackle and it signalled to me that he is definately ready for 1st grade!

Hopefully Sheens can take the Graham, Buettner glasses off and give player's like Plummy a go. If their form warrants selection, why not give them an opportunity.

all in due time, I still believe Plummy will get a run but it will be near the season's end.
