Lockyer *spoiler*

How well did Darren Lockyer play in the test, early on the combination between him and johns was fluid, but hunts injury was a blessing in disguise for Aust (bcoz he shudnt have been picked in the first place) because it brought the form half in the comp (thurston) onto the field and made lockyer fullback. from then on it was like watching lockyer of yesteryear, his great reads in defence (most notably catching benji's chip on the full on his goalline and making 30ms, b4 being tackeld by marshall) and his brillinant incisions in attack either by backing up as most fullbacks do (both his trys were from support play) or by playmaking as an effective "3rd receiver", (tahu's 2nd try).

to quote Matty Johns "Lockyer as a five-eighth is brilliant, and as a fullback is dynamic"

the question arises now, where to play lockyer. in 2003 and 2004 australia retained the GB series and the tri-nations, largely thanks to Lockyers brilliance from pivot (one play that comes to mind is the try he set up in the 3rd game of the series V GB in the last minute.) but many agree that he looks his best from fullback, where he has a lighter defensive load and is alot more dynamic.

My answer, to this dilemma would have to be to play lockyer at five-eitgh, not because of his talents in either position, but because of the availability of fullbacks and the lack of decent halves at a rep level. QLD has bowen, wesser, slater, inglis as brilliant fullback options, but onl has lockyer, thurston and prince in the halves. Australia have Minichello and Bowen, etc..., but only thurston, gower, orford and kimmorley in the halves.

Any thoughts on this???

1. Lockyer
6. Thurston
7. Prince
9. Smith
14. Bowen

Compare this to the probable NSW lineup;

1. Minichiello
6. Anasta
7. Gower
9. Buderus
14. Wing.

I think QLD might win this year.

id be more confident with that if prince was in better form and we didnt have a ton of great fullbacks to chose from...

Lockyer could have become one of the all time greats of Rugby League had he been kept as a fullback instead of switching to 5/8 3 years ago. However, Wayne Bennet dudded him of that honour.

Thats tragic in my opinion.

agreed
Lockyer was and after todays performance, still is the best fullback i think ive ever had the pleasure of watching, Brasher was awesome, Mullins was slick, Phillips was tough, Schifcofske is safe, Minichello is a game breaker, but Lockyer is all of those rolled into one!!!

Australia should be:

1. Lockyer
6. Thurston
7. Johns

Totally agree, it brought a tear to my eye watching him tear it up out there from FB, just like the old days.

Even played 2 years out of position, he's still the best I've ever seen. I'm a Rooster's supporter but I have no doubt that Mini would still be playing second fiddle if he hadn't had the switch forced on him.

As you say it would be a tragedy if he is not remembered as one of the all time greats just because the Broncos couldn't get a decent 5/8th. All this talk of Johns being a better player is a bit ridiculous. People are judging Locky on his performances in the halves, where Johns is clearly the better player. However in his natural position, Lockyer is just unbeatable.

Lockyer was a passenger for most of it and looked like an old man on very tired legs, However he was MUCH better at fullback.

f**k I couldn't believe how much I missed him at fullback! He needs to be back at the fullback!

Bring him back for origin!

Apparently Lockyer was too old and couldn't play fullback anymore, I think that myth just went out the window last night, the position fitted him like a glove. I really don't see any reason we can't move him back there for the Broncos and push Hunt into 5/8.

He clearly needs to make the move back.

There are better five-eighths than him at the moment (headed by Thurston), but no one is better as a #1.

20 minutes and he's the best number one??? He played well there last night but 20 minutes doesnt makeyou number one. Minichello is still better fullback than him currently. And Brasher was a superior fullback also.

I really thought Locky was past it as far as loosing speed and the ability to read the play from fullback, but he really showed last night that class lasts longer than fitness or age

Wayne can't move him back now - Ricky came up with the idea.

Ricky improvised because Australia had no other fullbacks. I'm sure Benny'd do the same if the situation called for it.
