Darren Lockyer played 50 minutes at five-eight and 30 mins at fullback - Lockyer was great last night as we have come to expect from the captain when he pulls on that green and gold jersey. With Johns taking control, Lockyer had the option of sitting back and picking his spots last night - a luxury he hopes to have with Thurston in Origin this year. When at fullback he defused a couple of hairy situations (one chip kick that was rolling end over end and the other a chip kick he took on the full in which he nearly took it the length of the field) and looked as comfortable as ever.
Lockyer has not played fullback since 2003, last night you would not have known. Should we have been surprised? No, but few would of predicted the ease of transition from the greatest fullback of the modern era.
The speed of Lockyer is still there, the night he ran down David Simmons from one side of the field in round two proved that - will he play fullback for Queensland? I am reluctant to move him from five-eight for an entire series given we have Matt Bowen on stand by. I think it will come down to the form of Scott Prince who has been below his best in 2006. If he starts firing, the selectors might be forced to move Lockyer back there for Origin with Bowen to the bench.
