Skolars have signed Tony Benson as their new coach. They've also signed the unfortunately named Irish international Wayne Kerr.

BTW, can one of the moderators on this forum rename this thread Skolars news, and I'll update it throughout the season.

After the Ireland/Lebanon game I wondered if an NL club would pick Kerr up. He seemed up to that standard, especially his big defence. Good to see it was Skolars. He was also good against Russia BTW.

Great news for big Wayne Kerr. He was terrific against Lebanon and could become a real cult figure for the Skolars this season and in Australia for Ireland in the World Cup, not only because of his name, but also his presence and ability on the field. Best of luck to him, I hope he kicks on.

Skolars have had one of their best wins ever, defeating NL1's Sheffield Eagles 50-32 away from home in the Northern Rail Cup. A great result considering none of the 2008 signings played.

I couldn't believe the result against Celtic Crusaders, great stuff.

Finished 18-14 to Skolars.

Neither can I believe this. In the paper, yesterday it actually said 6-6, and that amazed me enough, I would have easily settled for a draw.

I guess considering Skolars have been competitive in every game played so far, and Crusaders haven't blown anyone away, it's no huge surprise. Still just one player such as Josh Hannay, Darren Mapp or Terry Martin, is probably on more money than the entire Skolars squad, most of which only play for £250 (or maybe £125??) a win.

Still if I look back to the first fixture, where Crsusaders looked decidedly disinterested, if it wasn't for Josh Hannay, completely carving up former Aussie 7's Union rep Michael Chan in the centres, then it could have been very tight.

I am certainly a very happy season ticket holder with this result. With encouraging results like this, we might be half a chance of a decent run in the Challenge Cup. Just got to get past the ammatuers of Queens next week, and round 4 awaits.

Tony Benson looks like he might be a pretty decent coach.

CELTIC CRUSADERS 14 LONDON SKOLARS 18

By Ian Golden at Brewery Field

In horrendous conditions in Bridgend on a cold Saturday night, London Skolars ruined Celtic Crusaders’ St David’s Day celebrations by beating them for the first time in ten attempts thanks to a late Jermaine Coleman try.

It was the Londoners’ second win in as many weeks away from home against National League One opposition following their 50-32 victory at Sheffield Eagles last Friday and their coach Tony Benson claims that this amazing double is just reward for their efforts.

“We’re probably the only people that expected to win today,” said Benson. “We played well against Sheffield last week although it’s funny, people said Sheffield were rubbish. However I think we proved this week that we’d be very lucky to have played two rubbish teams in a row. We’ve worked hard in recent weeks and improved a lot and that came off today. When it started raining we decided to tighten up, play the percentage game and it came off in the end. It was a bit of lucky try that won us the game I’ll admit that, but we’ll accept it.”

Just an Ian Webster conversion separated the sides with two minutes to go and Crusaders thought that they had done enough for a narrow win. However they didn’t account for Skolars’ determination. The dreadful conditions, albeit not quite as bad as in Leeds the night beforehand, certainly played their part in the scoreline, but to Skolars’ credit, their handling game was better than the Crusaders, they made fewer errors and thoroughly deserved their win.

Crusaders’ coach John Dixon gave the visitors credit.

“They’ve two wins in a row so they’re doing really well right now,” Dixon said. “It’s good to see developing teams play well, it’s just not good to see them play well against us. I give Skolars credit today, they put a lot of hard work in.

“We were never in control of that game. We started really well and we maintained our lead until two minutes before the end. But we didn’t have enough quality in our ball control today to maintain field position and it came unstuck for us today. I always felt we’d win the game but we weren’t good enough in the last two minutes.”

Crusaders now have an intriguing Challenge Cup tie next Sunday when they take on Russian champions Lokomotiv Moscow at the Brewery Field.

“We don’t know anything about Moscow,” Dixon admitted. “So it’ll be a chance to concentrate and work on ourselves. Following today’s performance there are a few areas we need to work on so that’ll keep us busy for sure.”

Skolars were unlucky not to take the lead after only two minutes when Namila Davui took advantage of a loose ball to ground but the centre was try ruled out for offside.

So it was the Welsh side who went 10-0 up in almost as many minutes. A try from Crusaders’ man of the match Neil Budworth opened proceedings in the sixth minute while a mazy Jordan James run under the sticks converted by Ian Webster made the score 10-0 five minutes later.

Skolars struck back just before the 20 minute mark. Tane Taikoto laid the ball off to Austin Aggrey who grounded in the corner.

They added another five minutes later to reduce the margin to 10-8. A fine passing move sent Davui through and he scored in the opposite corner.

But Crusaders extended their lead just after the half hour through a Ben Flower try after excellent breaks from Budworth and Tony Duggan.

Skolars could have levelled things just before the interval but Dave Ellison’s potentially dangerous chip was well caught by Anthony Blackwood.

However they crucially got back into the game after eight minutes of the second half through a Wayne Kerr try.

But as the rain got steadily worse so did the handling errors, as both sides struggled for further scores. Blackwood was closest to a try for the Crusaders but he mishandled as he was near to the line.

So it was left to Skolars to clinch their first ever win over the Crusaders with just two minutes left on the clock when Jermaine Coleman went over and Thorman converted.

However the drama wasn’t over yet as Crusaders thought they’d won the game back when Josh Hannay went over the line with just three seconds left on the clock. But this was disallowed thanks to a forward pass and the Skolars celebrated their hard-fought victory.

Tony Benson was very highly rated in NZ, but was treated poorly by Leigh. Looks like it could be a good season ahead for the Skolars.

Horrible weekend for the Skolars. Smashed by 50 up at Doncaster and then towelled by Rochdale also by 50.

The only excuses I can come up with are that we were missing a few forwards, notably Wayne Kerr, Tane Taitako, Travis Ribot and Rupert Jonker, who hasn't played a game since I've been in London. Incidentally I just noticed today in the program what a great try scoring record this South African has. Something like 27 in 65 matches.

Further excuses would be the 2 teams we played were both in NL1 last year. And I don't think heavy conditions such as the bog today suit our light looking side.

Anyway, it doesn't get any easier with Barrow in town next week. I think I'd settle for a tight loss going on this weekends form.

Another poor performance for the Skolars, getting beaten by 50 at home to Barrow. It's hard to pinpoint just what has gone wrong since the wins over Sheffield and Celtic, but certainly Rochdale and Barrow have handled the new River mud bath far better over the last 2 matches. There were too many poor missed tackles yesterday, and i do still think we currently lack steal on the fringe of the ruck. We had 2 Aussie park footy players in the 2nd row yesterday and another at 5/8, our depth is definitely being tested.

I can't tell you who played well for Skolars as i couldn't tell who was who by the end of the match.

How is Puna going mate ?
He had a good year in JB Cup last year and Jersey Flegg before that.

Puna is definely one of the worst. Looks unfit and immobile. Hasn't impressed me one bit. I can't believe he started on Saturday ahead of Richard Louw who is a tremendous player at this level.

He looked better a few years back when he played for Endeavour. He used to be a lock forward back then right?

Another loss, this time 34-24 away at Swinton. First point of the season secured though due to the losing margin.

I love all exotic signings!

Have the scholars only got one of the Thorman brothers Ali?

And who have you got in the CC this weekend?

Yeah we've got Paul Thorman. I'd prefer we had Chris! Paul doubles as a development officer for the club.

He was featured in the press holding the challenge Cup aloft up at Finsbury Park on Monday. No doubt the first of 2 times he lifts it this season.
