Hi All the coaching issues waxes and wanes doesn’t it? I have always posted that yes of course a coach is an integral part of success but not to the extent of influence some promote it to be.
Tim Sheens has won 3 grand finals with Raiders and one with Tigers. Maguire won a premiership with souths. Both Sheens and Maguire have a win ratio of about 50 %. It is interesting that now Tim will show ( oversee?) Madge how to be a winner. Shane Flanagan has a premiership ring and a 55 % win ratio only at one club.
The great Wayne Bennett has a 63% win ratio over his career. His 3 years at the Knights only 45%. Jack Gibson has a win ratio of 62% across 6 clubs. He tanked with Sharks particularly at 43% over 72 games coached. Both Wayne and Jack had ordinary rosters ( like Dragons) at Knights and Sharks respectively. Wayne’s first year with the Dragons was successful but we bowed out early in finals 2009. In 2010 we ‘ went for broke‘ and Mark Gasnier returned on heavy $ backloaded contract and Bo Scott went back into the forwards. We nailed Grand Final with a fab team and Melbourne sprung on salary cap and out of finals.
Of course, the greatest winner is Craig Bellamy at 70% win ratio. 19 seasons with Melbourne. Also big one city team with highest 3 rd party payments. Craig was sounded out for other gigs including our team. He decided ‘I’m not going any where‘ why leave? This is coaching heaven. Well maybe haha. Trent Robinson second on 64%. Like Craig Bellamy he isn’t going anywhere. The $$$ and support are at Bondi Junction. Good luck to both these gentlemen.
Motto: Have a great roster foremost and backing of $$$ and influence and board etc. For Hook 2022, a dragons finals spot at least required.
At the top of the tree is Craig Bellamy at 7
