Cullen says Brisbane stars to be signed by next week
NRL club's latest contract offer to Test centre Brent Tate is a good one.
Cullen, who is also negotiating new contracts with several other Brisbane stars including Darren Lockyer, Gorden Tallis, Petero Civoniceva and young guns Karmichael Hunt and Brett Seymour, was puzzled today by reports that Tate was not happy with Brisbane's offer.
Cullen expects all the players coming off contract, including Tate, to be re-signed by June 30 - the NRL's anti-tampering deadline.
"I'm unaware Tatie is unhappy with the offer," said Cullen who is also negotiating a new deal with utility Casey McGuire.
Cullen said that if a cashed-up NRL club approached Tate with what he called a "ridiculous offer", then Brisbane wouldn't be able to match that.
"But for a centre of his age (22), who's achieved what he's achieved, I think it's a very good offer," said Cullen.
"I'm not sure where those comments are coming from."
Tate would be hot property on the open market with several clubs looking for attacking players.
But his future, at least this season, has been clouded by an ongoing shoulder problem which not only delayed his start to the season but also cost him a Queensland jumper in the second Origin game.
Few players walk out on the Broncos and Tate is unlikely to leave the club which launched his representative career or turn his back on the opportunity to play regularly under Australian coach Wayne Bennett.
Tallis yesterday revealed his desire to go around for a 10th season with the Broncos, provided his neck specialist, Dr Geoff Askin, is happy with his latest scans.
Tallis, who underwent spinal surgery in 2001 to save his career, suffered inflammation of the neck in a tackle against St George Illawarra last month which raised some doubts about playing on.
But if next week's specialist report is positive, he is tipped to saddle up for another season.
Tate returns from his shoulder injury against Canberra on Sunday, however Tallis has delayed his comeback until the following round against Souths, a few days after visiting his specialist.
