Loss against Cronulla

I have a few thoughts on the game. Firstly, it wouldn't be fair to credit Cronulla for their defence when one considers just how mediocre our attack was. I also don't think it would be fair to question the commitment of our team or their attitude but there are some damning issues within the current set up. You could see the guys ripping in but we just lack the talent unfortunately. You could see Young, Weyman, Nightingale and Morris really digging in and the desire was there but this is an unbalanced football team.

I think tonight showed that we do not have a team that can win the competition this year. Stanley and Green do not provide enough of a threat on the edges nor the speed to trouble the opposition too much. Now I understand both are relatively young, and yes Green looks to have a handy fend and runs straight but neither look like really causing problems. The speed on the fringes just isn't there. Even when Cooper returns he has no where near the pace he once had. Without speed on the fringes we are pedestrian in attack.

We don't have halves that can regularly create opportunities for the outside men to begin with. We kick the ball on the last just because its the last. Another big issue I have is that we never seem intent on forcing repeat sets. If we don't manage to score we just put up a bomb. Why not roll one into the in goal and get a repeat set?

When we go forward we need to go forward in numbers. Not just to create second phase play but going forward in numbers also forces the entire defensive line to move up rather than just two or three opposition defenders; that is one way of getting the defence back pedaling. The more numbers that have to move up in defence, the more numbers the opposition have to reset in defence. Our forwards are like sitting ducks at the moment because of all the one out running.

A good example would be the David Stagg try against Souths yesterday. Tollman was first off the ruck and took it forward, he passed to Sam Kasiano before the line and as Sam drifted right he threw a beautiful little off the hip pass to Stagg who ran a nice straight line through the hole. This was simple but very effective and the whole Souths defensive line were forced to push up because there were 3 or 4 possible ball receivers.

When we get in a good attacking zone we don't work the defence around. We do everything slower than just about every team in the competition. We had enough ball tonight to win 5 games of football. I am not going to start calling for peoples heads or swap this guy with that guy because lets face it, this is the team we have whether we like it or not. Unfortunately I get the feeling its going to be a long year. I hope not...

Breathingfire...mate I have read your thread twice and have to say whilst I dont like admitting it myself about our current situation i have to agree with you....you have made imo some very valid points, and I like you I think it may be a long year....lets hope were both wrong.

It is not intended to be a cheap shot I just think we threw nothing at them. I have seen Cronulla play a lot better and lose games. They scored a try involving 3 forward passes and another off a grubber kick that our centre just watched??!! They won't worry too many of the good sides the Sharks. But then again neither will the Saints :(

Gee up. Right?

Anyway, it was an enjoyable game and the best thing is it's on again in a few short months. Friday 13th July at WIN Stadium.

Can't win 'em all Drags. We Sharks know that all too well :)

Look Ausguy...well done on the win mate. Congratulations. I am not trying to bash the Sharks. They won fair square and good luck to them. I am posting for my fellow Dragons supporters and I am of the opinion that we did not throw much at Cronulla in attack. I think it would be unjust and misleading to talk the game up as a fantastic defensive display from Cronulla involving try saving tackles and last ditch dives to stop try's. Wave after wave of penetrating running and frenetic ball movement, when in reality we went through the motions and kicked on the last...get it?

If you love a club some games and even some years you just have to suck it up. Bit early imo to scratch this year just yet.

Just calling it how I see it. I will still turn up every week and cheer on the boys. I guess I am just trying to come to terms with losing against the Sharkies.

It alll started with our slow defensive line moving very slow never a straight in your face defensive line.
This gave the sharks plenty of room to move into our half and when the Dragons tried to bring the ball back out of our half we could only reach the sharks 40 metre no field position to mount a structured attack.
Zero attack, slow defensive , out muscled by the sharks.

Well played Sharks!

For the record I agree with BF. The Dragons didn't throw much at the Sharks and perhaps Price didn't do his homework because they missed the obvious vulnerability the Sharks have week in and week out.

Having said that though, what they did throw at the Sharks still had to be defended and it was. Flawlessly in this case as the Drags didn't get a point despite having 40 odd tackles in the Sharks 20. Poor attack or not, that's a good defensive effort from any tea,

I didn't see any of the game as I was out.

By looking at the score we were obviously paying tribute to all the premierships the sharks have won.

That's all I got....... I won't be watching the replay!
