Nightingale's pass very was so forward it wasn't funny. Our union team suffered a similar fate at the 2007 World Cup with the winning try coming off a blatant forward pass (the referee also conspired against us IMO). It's mind-boggling to me that forward passes cannot be checked via the video referee, especially 'blatant' ones that you could say led to two Kiwi tries. Give BOTD to marginal ones, but rule on them. One day a team is going to lose a GF due to a forward pass that cannot be ruled on.
I have absolutely no idea why the Video Ref is unable to call on forward passes. As you mention, the blatant ones are abundantly clear on replay, and it is very simple to call BOTD on the 50/50 passes. Both passes last night, and the Luke Lewis pass against the Poms would have been very easy for a video ref to make the call on.

Also there was ineptitude on the part of the touchies in the lead-up to Tate's try. SURELY he could have seen that?

He wasn't even watching the line. He was more concerned about the action on the field. You have to question how much these touchies are paid, and whether it's worth it, when they clearly aren't doing their job.

A) The fans are being cheated, and not getting what they are paying for , fair play in the spirit of the game

If there is a clear forward pass in a try movement and the video ref sees it and still allows the try.

That is cheating by the official and which is not in the spirit of the game .

: the video ref is not allowed to rule on forward passes .

The league should put a disclaimer on the tickets , fans arent getting fair play

My god - you never fail to live up to your hype. You could be the dumbest poster on here...

Thats impressive given the quality Hayne Train and Tonearm Terrorist posts.

Dropped on the head - or were the guests at your parents wedding confused as to which side of the isle to sit?

Slater didn't cost us the game but he did his best with that knock on under little pressure from chasers. He is HOPELESS under pressure. Almost guaranteed to spill a high ball at the worst possible time.

While we all like to have a shot at him because he's such a wanker, he obviously adds a lot of value too and can be a brilliant attacking weapon chasing kicks and chiming into backline plays. I just wish he wasn't such a liability when it comes to crunch time

Do you set up tries for the opposition, or drop simple bombs at crucial moments because you don't crumble under pressure?

Do you throw ridiculously unnecessary passes to spectators in the third row when you have the ability to read big games?

Slater can be brilliant. But it's only possible when he's doing exactly as he's told - ie running off Cameron Smith, chasing down a Lockyer chip kick. Give him room to improvise or do his own thing, and he invariably goofs it up. The performances that have won him those accolades you mention, are all from rehearsed set plays where he serves (albeit to perfection) as a foil to a quality playmaker.

So what you are saying is he is a good support player? He does call a lot of plays himself, like the try in origin of the Thurston grubber was called by Slater.

Tbh had the ref pulled up either one of the forward pass tries by NZ and we would be talking about his match winning solo try where he did his own thing as you say.

You don't think that origin grubber try was a rehearsed play?

He's more than a support player, but IMO he'll never be a good playmaker. And if Australia had won last night, people here would still be talking about his goofs.

What Slater is, is an incredibly instinctive player who does things at pace. Because he does it at pace and instinctively, he is unpredictable and dangerous all the time, in the age of video analysis. Because he does it at pace and instictively, he makes mistakes. Usually his influence on a game is far more positive than negative. And he puts in the effort. Watching on TV, you can't see the million miles he does in a game, just so he just happens to turn up in the right place at the right time. Plenty of times he puts in a sprint and it turns to nought.

I don't follow Melbourne, I don't follow Qld, hell I don't even support Oz, but I think Slater is one of the best RL attacking players I've seen in over 40 years of watching the game.
