I don't think he was given the captaincy as a token gesture to lure Joel to Manly. He is a good leader and it didn't appear to affect his form against Canterbury. Steve Menzies made the decision for himself, he was not pressured into anything by the club. I think it's just a coincidence. The only other option was to give Walker the captaincy, but seeing as they are both in their first year here I don't think you can say one deserves it more than the other.
