MacDougall heads back home
July 21, 2006
FORMER Test winger Adam MacDougall will return to Newcastle next NRL season with the disgruntled South Sydney star unable to resist the constant badgering of Knights skipper Andrew Johns.
MacDougall agreed to a two-year deal with the Knights and will return to the club at which he won two NRL premierships after an unhappy three-year stint at the Rabbitohs.
The 31-year-old said persuasive phone calls from Johns and several other of his former Knights had tipped the scales in their favour after he had also been weighing up an offer from league leader Melbourne.
"Having players like Andrew Johns expressing their desire to play with you once again, it's pretty flattering," MacDougall said.
"We're friends off the field. You win two premierships with a bloke, you manage to get a special connection there.
"At least I know going back there and running out with these guys they definitely want me playing with them."
MacDougall admitted had he had his time again he would never have left the Knights at the end of the 2003 season.
"Deep, deep down I've always regretted leaving the club. In hindsight, I wish I didn't leave but I did. I decided to go and play with my brother which was a great experience," MacDougall said.
"It's a great way to finish my career, a great opportunity. I don't know how many players get to go back and finish their career at the club they started."
Unfortunately for MacDougall, a deal to play out the remainder of this season with Super League club Hull before heading to Newcastle broke down today.
