Another song i'd like to nominate is Masters of War by Bob Dylan.
This song, however, was covered by Pearl Jam BUT they asked Mr Zimmerman himself to join in on the Live Version they recorded. Pearl Jam PLUS Bob Dylan = Musical Gold !!

Search for it on Limewire or whatever ... the singing is perfect (Eddie is MUCH better than Bob as a singer ;-), but its Stone and Mike who do the wonderful guitaring ... Please listen to it, you'll love it (unless you are a Redneck ;-))

BOB DYLAN - Masters of War

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

Maybe try and research the lyrics to the Celebration of The Lizard (it WONT be that easy btw), and perhaps you might understand why i revere him so much.

Here's a tiny bit of a clue ...

Don't worry..I own all of their albums, etc. He's over-rated.

That's better.

How about "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall"?

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains,
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways,
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests,
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans,
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it,
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin',
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin',
I saw a white ladder all covered with water,
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken,
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin',
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world,
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin',
Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin',
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin',
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter,
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony,
I met a white man who walked a black dog,
I met a young woman whose body was burning,
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow,
I met one man who was wounded in love,
I met another man who was wounded with hatred,
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin',
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden,
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,
Where black is the color, where none is the number,
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin',
But I'll know my song well before I start singin',
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Fair enough mate, thats your opinion. Im glad its not mine ... without those who pushed the boundaries like Hendrix, Dylan and Morrison and many many others from that era, live music would be quite stale today. For example ... would Heavy Metal have existed without Hendrix showing the world how to get the most from a guitar ? I doubt it.

FACT: Recognising Tears for Fears' Mad World won me $2500 in "Greedy Pig" — a Triple M radio competition. So there.

FACT: Pale Shelter is a slightly better song than Mad World.

The Who laid the foundation for metal with Live At Leeds, but sadly most actual metal is bollocks.

Morrison isn't fit to tie the shoelaces of Dylan from a songwriting point of view, nor Hendrix from a musical point of view.

Totally debatable, from every perspective. Hendrix was the first to cross Blues with rock (as he was essentially a Blues guitarist ONLY ... but he wanted to expand more, and i believe he laid the foundation for all metal/blues/rock as we see it today. But still ... not many would agree with you about Morrison. OK i know you obviously detest the guy, but to say he's a bad songwriter is foolish, especially when you see the bollocks released as music today. But Morrison is essentially a lyricist (or for the lesser schooled, a poet) ... so maybe you cant quite get that. There were no lyricists after him ... put it this way. This is why he shines out like a beacon, and not many have ever matched it. Actually ive never seen one who can. Dylan comes closest though.

I'm a Doors fan but let's face it the Doors are more about the legend of Jim Morrison, we love to get caught up in the tales of an outrageous frontman. The music of the Doors itself doesn't live up to the legend and the Celebration of the Lizard is certainly nothing special.

To compare him to Dylan is quite laughable.

Ummm...there was plenty of Blues/Rock crossover in the 50s with guys like Bo Diddley, etc. before Hendrix came along. What about the early 60s with Clapton? Beck? Page? Hell even the Stones were doing blues crossover before Hendrix.

I never said Morrison was crap, I just said he was over-rated...
