The Bulldogs have received a blow ahead of the finals with lock Reni Maitua today ruled out for up to two weeks with a knee injury.

MRI scans have revealed Maitua suffered a meniscul tear in his left knee and he's certain to miss Saturday night's qualifying final against Canberra at Telstra Stadium. Bulldogs officials says the injury is less serious than a ligament tear and he should return in the second half of the finals.

Maitua is the third Bulldog to be struck down by a knee injury in the past month and joins prop Roy Asotasi and centre Willie Tonga on the sidelines. Tonga won't return in 2006 but Asotasi could make a comeback if the Bulldogs reach the grand final.

Great news for Raiders fans.

Maitua has been their form player along with Patten and Holdsworth. Him and Grimaldi, who is also out, do a lot of their grunt work and tackling like Tonguey does for us.

Can you smell an upset?

Not me. You take any advantage you can get at this stage. We'd like TLL and Miller there so it all evens out somewhat.

Asotasi, Tonga, Maitua, Grimaldi, Phelps amongst others

Yeah....that is somewhat even

We have a team that should beat your lot though so if we don't win this game then we shouldn't be there. No excuses.

Seriously, as if you'd snap your fingers and make a full strength Dogs side appear.

Any advantage we can get works for me.

We stay under the cap because our players (the majority of them) have been developed. Guys like Asotasi, Maitua etc were on less than 100k this season from their previous contracts. No doubt those two are worth 500k combined, but they have been developed into stars, not bought as stars.

The list of players we have developed continues to grow...SBW, Mason, Asotasi, Tonga, Armit, Myles, Utai...you could even argue that Holdsworth, Patten and co. have become much better players since leaving their old clubs.

Just because we have a team of star players it doesn't necessarily mean they are all getting paid what they deserve. TBH Holdsworth is on somewhere between 50-80k this year. His next contract will earn him something like 150-200k you would think..
