On April 25, 2006, Bulldogs player Reni Maitua was charged with a high range drink-driving offence. The Bulldogs Board issued a breach notice to Maitua for the offence as it contravened the conditions of his NRL Playing Contract.
The Board has taken into account submissions from Maitua and has imposed the following penalty:
- Reni Maitua has been fined $15,000 of which the sum of $7,500 is payable on terms to be discussed, with the balance of $7,500 suspended pending possible further breaches.
- In addition, the Board has agreed to Maitua's requests to attend an alcohol awareness program and to participate in a community service program.
Commenting on the decision, Bulldogs CEO Malcolm Noad said, "Reni, like all rugby league players, is a role model in the community. His actions have given the wrong message to league supporters, particularly to kids, and he has accepted the decision handed down by the Board.
"I'm sure he has learnt from this experience and realises that the result of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated could have been far, far worse than the penalty handed down by the Board."
Reni Maitua said, "This has been a massive wake-up call for me and I understand the Club had to impose the penalty that it did."
