Why can't the NRL make all players who come into first grade sign a 10 year contract stating that they can not leave the code or NRL for another unless agrred by both parties.

The only reason any of these guys are getting the big $$$ is because the clubs and NRL have turned them into elite athletes and shoud get some of this investment back.

If they refuse to sign then bad luck...go play in the park or play rugby and see what your worth to a French Rugby club.

These players are using league as a stepping stone.

Its like an inventor and investor patent an object which gives them exclusive rights to it for 10 years or whatever.

Or my employer paying my course fees which Imust reimburse if I leave before 4 years.

Surely it can be done.

That's a flat out Restraint of trade. Such a contract also lacks the element of consideration.

Perhaps you should include in the contract that they must pay for free too.

How is it a restraint of trade?
You have to join the army for 4 years or do a 4 year indentured apprenticeship.
You have a choice...try your lucka t another code or join ours for XX years.

Are they guaranteed some form of pay in those ten years?

The army and an indentured apprenticeship guarantee income for the duration.

Military contracts are enforceable under specific legislation.

You cannot otherwise enforce contracts of servitude like the one you suggest.

Not only that, but would the contract be both ways with the NRL guaranteeing pay for 10 years....

Well they would have to be...

Look all.....the reality is that it probably would not work...but you have to start thinking about protecting your investments.

If you develop a product then there are laws to stop predators from stealing these products at your expense.

Clubs won't agree, and the NRL won't agree, because it will mean they have to justify payments for 10 years. Contracts favour clubs most of the time, and this idea would take away any option of releasing a player early.
