Mal Meninga leaving Canberra

Just announced on 2GB continuous call .... Mal and family will be returning to Brisbane.

Along with the departure of Paul "Ossie" Osborne they will be sadly missed in the organisation that needs to bring back more of our former greats to Canberra.

My best wishes goes to Mal ... a loyal servant to the club over a period of some 18 years.

It is sad to see the big fella leave us but he has done his bit, as player, coach and board member. I hope he stays involved but we could not have asked for anymore from the (next) Immortal.

I think the greatest compliment I can pay Mal is the simple fact that I dont know words that are adequate enough to convey the enormous respect I have for the man, not just as a footballer, not just as an off-field worker for the Raiders, but also as a man.

In today's CT Mal Meninga said "he was keen to carry on helping the Green Machine from Brisbane in any way he could". He has been given a contract in CQ to expand a primary after school sports program he has been involved with in Canberra. He said that although he had not discussed the future in great detail with the Raiders management, he hoped he would be able to retain a strong connection and continue to serve the club. "I think my moving could actually come as a benefit for the Raiders and help make it a more national club. I'll definitely be keen to do some talent scouting up here and continue to promote the club."

About the move he said "We made the decision as a family and we have no regrets about leaving". The hardest thing has been leaving friends. "It has been sad, a few tears have been shed, they don't want us to go but its a new opportunity".

With his daughter remaining in the ACT he expects to be a regular visitor. "You will see me around, that's for sure."

Mal... you ARE a Raiders legend, the next immortal....

If the club stuffs up AGAIN and doesn't create a role for him.... I will be marching on Battye Street!!!!!!!!!
