Mason is pure Bulldogs magic
HE shares a name with one of the Bulldogs' giants, but 19-year-old Mason Pure is fast becoming the NRL's next Sonny Bill Williams.
Standing 188cm tall and weighing in at 100kg, Pure is one of the Bulldogs' latest New Zealand recruits to play in the under-21 Jersey Flegg side.
While in the Shakey Isles, the young giant played rugby union in the New Zealand premier league competition, but when the opportunity arose to play for the Bulldogs, Pure pounced on it.
``I've been playing union all my life for a representative spot,'' he said.
``This one year that I've been playing league, everything has happened for me to help my career.''
Pure said that league was a faster-paced game and had better hits and tackles than union.
He plays as a centre and second-rower, but prefers to wear the number 13 jersey and play lock.
Pure's manager Darryl Mather, of SFX Sports, said that the new recruit was making a name for himself as a talented junior at the club.
``He was hand-picked by the club because of his obvious potential,'' Mather said.
``He has all the attributes to achieve a sound football career he's just got to be patient and he'll be great.''
And dreams are slowly turning into reality for Pure, who admits that he was always hoping to play with the Dogs.
``I'm so happy that the Doggies gave me a chance to come over to Australia and play,'' he said.
``Growing up, this was always the team I wanted to play for.''
His long-term goal is to play first grade in a few years, alongside his idol Sonny Bill Williams.
``Sonny Bill has achieved so much already he's done what I want to do and he's only 22.''
First Pure has to get the experience, but he's quite clear he's willing to do whatever it takes to make it as a Bulldog.
