Mass Expansion possible with de- mergers

The NRL and AFL need to agree to pull both their teams from the Gold coast. Neither looses 'face' and both stop wasting resources and time there.
I wouldn't care if my club split and we ended up with wests magpies and Brisbane Tigers
If the AFL and NRL both pulled their GC teams...

* The NRL would contract to 16 teams, add Perth, PNG (both confirmed) then Brisbane 3 & Christchurch, and we have a decent 20 team footprint for a while.

* The AFL would contract to 17 teams. Add Tasmania (maybe with a compromise on the new stadium), Canberra & a 3rd expansion team (3rd WA team?) and they'd be set for a while.

Well, now you mention it I wouldn't be against it... but to be honest we've got a tough enough fight convincing the NRL team 20 should be in Christchurch instead of SE-Qld - and THEY have the promise of a sparkly new covered stadium in their CBD.

Realistic best case for us is that NZ gets a 2nd team (likely Christchurch), and one of the NZ teams adopts us here in Wellington as a secondary market playing a home game (or GAMES) here every season as part of that deal.

It's just a damn shame that team 20 has to come down to a choice between SEQ & NZ.. when we really could have both in a 20 team competition if the PNG Gravy-Trainers weren't happening.

League is national sport for PNG. Deserves and team more than Melbourne or Perth

Just as much chance Perth team goes bankrupt
The Perth team that has a whole city of 1 million+ people with disposable income aplenty, plus the Bears brand that appeals to North Sydney's base?

THAT team?

As much chance of failure as a team based in a developing nation with serious security concerns?

Interesting equivalence you're drawing there.

PNG hunters going strong since 2013. Perth reds lasted 3 seasons

Gobs this is the third thread you’ve made where I’ve been thinking of something then somehow you post that exact thing lol

Mergers will never work

Magpies should take over the club and rebrand playing most of their games at Campbelltown and some at commbank or / Accor

Tigers should do what the bears did and join easts tigers in Brisbane playing two games at leichardt oval

Illawarra should get their own side now owned by the Gordon family

Which leaves the dragons splitting six games at kogarah and the rest at Allianz or the move you suggest to Adelaide with 2 games in Sydney

I remain unconvinced that the economics & logistics stack up without huge ongoing Government spending. What happens when that dries up?
PNG will end up one of the richest clubs in the league

The funding gets them there quicker than otherwise

PNG will be way stronger than the warriors

If this is campaign to get rid of poorly performing clubs …add the Titans to the list …they are clearly not working either

There has never been a successful sporting team based on the GC either …something in the water up there ?

The Tigers, Sharks and Dragons have all won premierships in the past 20 years … the Titans have never been close
It produces heaps of NRL talent though, is the 6th biggest city in the country and if removed, you'd just hand the area over to the AFL.

Titans are the only team in their city. Tigers, Sharks and Dragons aren't... Not that I think they should be kicked out either BTW.
