The Charity Shield played on Saturday night between Souths and St George Illawarra, and shown on Fuel TV had a massive drop in the number of people watching it.

This years game had 106,000 viewers compared to 218,000 for last year. That is a drop of just over 51 percent. The fact it was shown on Fuel TV may have been a reason for the drop in the numbers. But regardless the NRL, Souths, St George Illawarra and Fox Sports have to be very dissapointed with the figures.

The Charity Shield was beaten in the ratings by crickets Aust v SA test, the Ford Ranger Cup Final, A League grand final and an AFL NAB Pres Season game.

The fact you needed a compass and a map to find it didn't help.

How about focusing on the excellent 25k at the ground?

Because it had the A-League grand final and the live Aus Vs SA cricket match on the other Fox Sports channels.

Was gonna be hard to compete with the A-League grand final as well as being on a channel that would have never shown a league game before..

What exactly is 'Fuel TV'?

Is it a Foxtel Channel?

If it wasn't then how are we supposed to watch it????

If it was then

a) How was any league fan supposed to to know it was on 'fuel tv' as opposed to other channels?
b) Why would anyone who felt like watching sports even consider flicking onto 'fuel tv' as opposed to foxsports 1, 2, and 3?
c) In a licensed venue, how would bar staff who would have never heard of 'fuel tv' have any knowledge or access to 'fuel tv' if people requested to watch it at a specific pub or club.

It is a channel on Foxtel and they show extreme sports..MMA. Stuff like that.

a) it was advertised on the sports channels leading up to the game. Warren Smith was spruiking it with two 12 out of 10 models.
b) see A
c) punters who have some clue would have asked them to tune into that channel. Fox and austar had a promotion where for 10 days the channel is free.

Yes it is a Foxtel channel and a part of there sporting package. So if you have the Fox Sports channels then you have Fuel TV.

It was promoted, at least on the Fox Sports channels that the game was going to be shown on Fuel TV. It was also mentioned here on this forum and on Souths wensite.

As has been mentioend many times here and most other places everyone thought the crowd was great. I was there and it was a fantastic atmosphere.

The TV ratings were released today and most people were keen to see how it rated.

How did it rate on fuel tv compared with the show before it and the show after it...???

Was it the highest ratings a fuel TV show has ever received..???

One thing for sure, anyone reading these forums knows more about fuel tv today than they did last week...Let's not forget it was a foxtel promotion...

I was a mate's place on saturday night. He had Foxtel and we were flicking channels to decide what to watch. We watched the cricket, but had we known the Charity Shield was on we would have watched that. I'm sure a plenty of other people were in the same boat, so in this case 'ignorance' is a valid excuse.

Actually come to think of it, I was looking at the FOXTEL tv guide on saturday morning on the off chance that they might be playing the Eels v Roosters trial. All were showing other sports. Obviously I didn't think of checking the guide for 'fuel tv'.... because basically... to put it simply, I'd never heard of it.

tbh the Charity Shield shouldn't even be on tv. a) It's a trial and b) it's a charity fundraiser ffs - people should be paying to go and watch

They showed the Fiji vs France WC game on 'main event' last year. I only caught the last 5 minutes because I had no idea where it was being shown. BS Fox

Of course it was the reason.

If the league wants ratings to be high, and the ability to crow about it, then no way should it agree to games being shown on any other channel than their free-to-air broadcaster (currently 9 Network), or on the PayTV mainstream Fox Sports channels. And even though this is a trial game, the league should not agree to it's broadcasts being bumped elsewhere, otherwise we end up with threads comments and thoughts like this one.

Obviously this deal was done so that Fox could promote their bizarre Fuel TV channel, but at what cost to league and the average league fan?

Pretty highly I'd imagine, because put simply, the shows on Fuel TV before and after were sh*t! What a bizarre channel they're using rugby league to try and build an audience for.
