Matt Duffie to stay loyal to NRL

THE AFL and rugby union have missed the boat on teenage tryscoring sensation Matt Duffie, who has shunned offers from both codes and pledged loyalty to Melbourne Storm.

The 19-year-old winger took his try haul to seven from eight games after a double against the Cowboys on Saturday.

Duffie played senior level Aussie rules as a 16-year-old, was picked in the national team and was invited to attend an AFL-run testing session but had already signed with Storm.

And just last week Storm football manager Frank Ponissi rejected an offer for Duffie from the NSW Waratahs.

Despite the widespread interest however, Duffie, who revealed Storm signed him from union without ever seeing him play, said he didn't want to be anywhere else.

"I love league," he said. "And especially the boys down here, and the coaching staff, and I am loving the city. I want to stay around here for as long as possible.

"The club has been through a lot lately too and I want to be here while it rebuilds."

After all the crap that has gone on down there and still no real direction as to where the club is headed, we have a young player talking like this.

Great stuff Duff!!!

He's a goodun, as is O'Neil.

That's the sad thing about the cheating from the Storm. They've got good young kids coming through and I think they would've been fine if they had of released some big name players like everyone else has to.

Good on the kid, most players who have done nothing in league won't leave. All the players who have left the great game of Rugby League had achieved almost everything..

Yeah he should wait a few years before swapping codes to maximise his dollars. Don't change until you are well known.

I've said this all along. We never had the need to hold on to Turner, or sign Lowrie, or sign Stanley, or retain Hoffman, or retain Lima, or to sign Hinchcliffe, or to sign Quinn!

But yes, excellent news re: Duffie. I really hope to see him and O'Neill remain our wingers for a while: they appear to be good kids, at a good price.

By dropping others to create room, obviously.

Hopefully we're dropping Quinn for him, that'd save us a good $150k..but I don't see it happening :(

I heard a rumour that Quinn is heading North. Hopefully not too North.

Anyways, good on the kid. He is an amazing talent. Players like Duffie, Widdop, Kelly, O'Neil etc who have debuted this year or last are the players that storm are going to have to rebuild off and luckily for them they have some amazing young talent.
