Oh cool, he organised a payment plan once the media and public turned on him. That's noble.

I'm sure he was too busy volunteering at orphanages previous to that and just hadn't got round to paying.

Shit bloke who should never have been allowed back. Broncos fans will continue to idolize him, though.

I don't think there are too many broncos fans idolising him. I don't particularly enjoy watching him run out for the broncos and certainly don't cheer him on.

I'd have a raging lunatic footy player come smash some shit in my house, scare my family and put me in a headlock for $1.6M any day!

Yeh, how lucky are these guys.

So Lodge is now a $1.6M player under the Broncos cap. Nice 2nd attempt to sweep it all under the carpet by the most corrupt club in the comp.

It should have been done before he laced up a boot but the NRL doesn’t do logic(lodgic?).
At least it’s a step in the right direction so the victims get some sort of closure.
The timing is interesting seeing that Tim Simona is back in the news. I wonder where that is headed?

That’s nothing. We have nothing on Melbourne!

You'd like to think it was in the plan all the time but who'd credit the NRL with the forethought or the Broncos with the integrity for that?

Broncos wanted to see how good he was before covering his payout first.

Pretty much this I suspect. No coincidence he now has the money after showing some decent form for the broncos. Did Andrew gee broker the deal?

Right a few comments in here I would like to address

  • The court settlement originally awarded was $1.6 million - It was a stupid award given against someone with no income and no assets. The amount agreed to be repaid will be much, much, much less than this
  • Lodge was under no legal obligation to pay a cent as it was an award given by a foreign court
  • If he has not taken a mortgage against a property, a bank loan will be unsecured. Unsecured loans are generally anything under $100,000 - usually less than $50,000
  • Matthew Lodge currently earns minimum wage ($80,000) so the loan would not be huge - however it will be larger the amount he is legally bound to pay
  • As Lodge is paying the loan the Broncos do not need to include it under their salary cap - no more so than clubs have to include the mortgages of their players. That's not how the cap works.
  • Until now he was in no position to make repayments - he had no assets left and his income would not permit any sort of payment plan - taking out a loan and making a lump sum payment at an agreed amount was the best outcome for all parties involved
  • Banks do not give personal loans on the basis of guarantees backed by an employer - there is no legal precedent to permit this and no bank would agree to it. Loans have to be based on a persons ability to repay - it's called Responsible Lending and banks don't waive this. They are not permitted to. Guarantees from employers cannot be used when assessing ability to repay - nor can assets such as houses etc. It must be judged on income earned today.

Personally, I am very pleased that Matt Lodge and the family have come to an arrangement
I wish everyone involved all the best and hope they can all get on with their lives

He tried to settle for what he could afford and was turned down. He now can afford more that he has a serious career starting up with June 30 comming up and he's been reasonable quality. This is the outcome that the victims want.

After the interview, im very confident that he will be paying much less than the 1.6 million. They were very quick to say that they wont answer the question and there body language screamed that it was far less. Its all a pr stunt to cover his own arse. Look like a good guy by making it appear that hes paying all the cash back and that it was all his decision because of his virtuous ways. In reality, he can only pull in his half a million bucks plus income if he does this pr stunt. The family are no doubt still traumatised, they will be getting bugger all cash compared to what was agreed to and this tool gets to make big bucks whilst conning people into thinking hes turned over a new leaf and is now a good guy.

To be honest, i dislike him even more now than i did before.

Plenty of jobs going in the mines, right? If he needed to pay his dues he could've f**ked off and got a job there, paying the same if not more than the rumoured 80K the Broncos have him on. He could've made steps towards paying the affected families that way, then come back to league later on when those wheels were in motion. The idea of Uncle Wayne seeing a hole in his propping stocks and then deciding he could 'help' Lodge, and the NRL being callous enough to register a horrifically violent offender who had paid no penance is just as piss poor as it was when it happened.

Our code doesn't need a merkin like him in it. Woopie do, he's now started a weak payment plan after being harangued into doing it by the media. Wouldn't have happened otherwise, so let's not pretend Matt is a light unto us all now.

Russell Packer took nearly 5 years to pay $300k to his victim (may not have even paid it all yet) and according to the victim's family has not yet apologised for stomping on his head. But he makes his own kombucha now, so redemption complete apparently.

Plus you know, the small mention of jail time that you chose to leave out.
