Matthew Ridge kicking for touch = wtf????

Just watching an old eagles drubbing of St George that i got today

and in it, it has Matthew Ridge kicking for touch, in it, instead of punting it, he puts a hole in the ground, places it in it, and kicks for touch, basically like you would for a goal kick attempt. I remember him doing this a fair bit.

What was up with kicking for touch like that?
