England star Sam Tomkins eyes NRL

HE'S modelled his game on Kangaroos custodian Billy Slater - now English fullback Sam Tomkins could become the next UK superstar to try his hand in the NRL. Tomkins has told The Daily Telegraph he will entertain following fellow internationals Sam Burgess and Gareth Ellis to Australia at the end of his current contract with Wigan.

An electric 78kg custodian cut out of the same mould as former NSW Origin fullback Brett Hodgson, Tomkins set Leigh Village, in the north of England, alight last Sunday (AEDT) by opening his Four Nations account with a four-try haul against Wales.

Blessed with a combination of speed, vision and timing, Tomkins will now go one-on-one against the world's best fullback Slater when England meet the Kangaroos at Wembley Stadium in London next Sunday (AEDT).

I wouldn't like him at the Saints. I watch the superleague each week, and I think the things he benefits from over here, aren't there in the NRL.
He plays very sideways, is good in broken field no doubt, but a fullback these days needs to be a bit more robust, and direct. It's all about momentum and setting the tone for the set in the NRL. He's made his name cutting holes through crap kick chases. I think he's best off staying over here, and given that he's not long extended at Wigan, I'm pretty sure he will.
Saw an extensive interview with Sam on Brian Carney's footy show the other week, and he was asked if he'd ever leave Wigan, to which he basically replied no.
He is a grub as well, constantly coming in with cheap shots, and hiding behind his brother and the other big blokes. He was boo'd by his own fans, playing for England over here earlier this year. It takes a special sort of bloke to get that. No thanks.

Probably not a good idea using Wales as a yardstick for anything. Aussies would put 100 on them if they wanted to.

You would probably have more of a clue on Sam than we do, gypsy.....

What little I have seen of his attack has reminded me a little of Brett Stewart. Maybe the weekly grind of the NRL could help lift him to the skill level needed to be a success over here.

He would no doubt improve over there. The difference in talent between the top half of the teams and the bottom half here is massive, so much so, that people are calling for two separate pools. As you say, the grind of a big game each week, rather than a tough one followed by a walkover could help him. I don't think it'll ever happen though. I think if Kyle starts the year off well, like I hope he does, all this talk about people linking us to every fullback on the market (or off in this case) will stop

I f**king despise Tomkins. Never forget his grubbiness in the WCC: late flop on Morris after scoring, & headbutting Prior laying on the ground.

Still, take any good player.

Won't happen though.

Well I can tell you Dean, that sort of stuff from him is far from rare. Every week he's got some cheap shots in him. People are ridiculously comparing him to Slater, but the one part of his game that does match Slater's is the grubbiness.

Sounds like he'd be better suited with Timmy Moltzen at the Tigers.

Next!

Yeah, don't pesky types starting up posts for the purpose of discussion. When will they ever learn?

Well that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. But you call it a 'tip'. That's crossing the border into rumour. Are you starting a rumour?

No one is promoting any rumours in this thread. Apart from yourself.

The club has stated publicly we will not be signing anyone else.
Where have they said this?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the most recent signing was just over a week ago on 23rd October (Atelea Vea). In that media announcement the club said there was no interest in signing Carney, but there was no mention of there being no more signings. I find it difficult to believe that Vea is our last signing for 2012.

Ok, so I'll clarify... I should have said that the club had publicly stated (in the papers on the weekend) that they will not be buying another fullback regardless of te moltzen outcome.

As for signings in general, I do think they have completed their roster. Pre-season is about to start.
Besides that, i have no idea who else is left worth signing??

Re: rumours, I am not fueling anything. I just don't remeber the last time any mail or rumour was converted.

I would at least give people a source, not a name, but something that allows people to enjoy the discussion and possibility. Simply saying "this will happen" and then bolting off is not fair in my opinion.

But I did hear there is a certain "northern beaches" player looking to bunk down at kogarah.

I can't reveal what I know, but you wait!!!!!
