So true, I never smacked my kids. I wanted to be a better father than my dad. My way of discipline was to restrict rewards like no Nintendo if his room was a mess or something similar.
Education is important.
When I look back at my school days it was violent and it was child abuse.
Us kids thought it was normal behaviour to get the cane.
Yelling abuse at a child and telling them they're worthless has the worst effect on a kid growing up. Probably causes more suicides than anything else.

TBH, I think a bit of whacking a kid on the arse is what's missing these days.
I never hit my kids, but they knew when enough was enough.
Not drawing blood, but letting them know where the boundaries start and end.
You see a lot of kids today, who are just totally out of control.

It's a fine line heh. I was fortunate to have consistent parents. They were very very strict but not wishy washy. They wouldn't tell you what to do or what not to do one minute then tell you something totally different another time.
I think that's very important when raising kids.
Just like the NRL, all coaches want is consistency from our ref's and the judiciary.
