Media release by Weststigers, grant Mayer has resigned and Phill Moss will do his job to a replacement is found.

The guy made a lot of enemies and was in your face, but I think he did a fair job when you consider what he took over from. My guess he will turnhj up at Manly some time in the near future

Wests Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer resigns, effective immediately

Wests Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer has resigned, effective immediately.

The club's general manager of football operations, Phil Moss, will be acting CEO until a replacement is found.

Wests Tigers chair Marina Go said Mayer had been an asset to the joint-venture clubs for the last two years.

"Wests Tigers would like to thank Grant for his diligence and dedication to the club," Go said. "We look to take the next step in our evolution and a fresh approach to take us to the next level as a professional, world-class sporting organisation. Wests Tigers is looking forward to achieving the goals that are critical for a successful future for the Club, both on-field and off-field."

Mayer is the second NRL CEO to part company with his club in as many days following the resignation of Parramatta's Scott Seward on Sunday.

He had previously been the chief executive of Manly from 2006 until 2009 before taking on the role of commercial operations general manager with GWS Giants for three years.

Mayer joined Wests Tigers in a similar position in October 2012 before being appointed as chief executive in July 2013 following the departure of Stephen Humphreys.

His first involvement in the NRL was as events and operations manager with Canterbury from 1999 to 2005 - a role he left to become the founding chief executive of Super League's first French club, Catalans Dragons.

Just days ago, Mayer spoke confidently about the future of Wests Tigers after revelations that Balmain Leagues Club was on the verge of voluntary administration.

"The emotion surrounding the recent Balmain Tigers Leagues Club issues has created increased concern and confusion amongst Wests Tigers Members, fans and corporate supporter base," Mayer said in a statement last Wednesday.

"Put simply, there is no need for anyone from Wests Tigers point of view to be concerned. Wests Tigers have undergone a rigorous process with the NRL to secure the future of the club and would like to ease the concern of our extended family."

Interesting timing - just after a decent win & two days before Origin - hoping for the story to get less coverage than it normally would?
In the normal course of business people don't resign "effective immediately" leading to the question - did he jump or was he pushed?
If he left suddenly of his own accord it suggests he has a new job lined up. If he was pushed it means he has done something very wrong or pissed of some important people at the club. Could it be connected to the undermining of Potter and Farah last year? I suspect we'll learn more about this soon. Anyway, I see it as another chance for the club to become more professional if they hire the right replacement.

Certainly the 'effective immediately' and 'the club will make no further comment at this time' implies something was behind it. Normal resignations have a transition period, this is something else. Maybe the triumvirate of board, ceo and coach was at loggerheads and Mayer was the easy, sacrificial scapegoat.

Time will tell.

Thankful for the job he did.

Was always going to take a fall because of his demeanor and his efforts to call out the factional f**ktards for what they were

Glad the peaheart has gone. Any good he achieved was decimated by his handling of the Potter issue last year.

Grant Mayer linked with Manly as Barry O'Farrell emerges as Wests Tigers candidate

Grant Mayer has been linked with a return to Manly after a shock exit from Wests Tigers that may open the way for former NSW premier Barry O'Farrell to take over the CEO's job at the joint venture club.

Mayer, whose resignation is effective immediately, became the second NRL chief executive to part company with his club in as many days following Scott Seward's departure from Parramatta on Sunday.

And Fairfax Media has been told that the CEO merry-go-round is yet to stop, with a third club chief executive poised to leave their post in coming days or weeks.

Speculation linking Mayer to the Sea Eagles would suggest that new Manly chief executive Joe Kelly may be that person after just nine months in the job.

Mayer previously worked as the Sea Eagles chief executive from 2006 to 2009 and is believed to have a good relationship with the Penn family, who are the club's major shareholders and late last year wrested control of the board.

While his resignation from the Tigers is understood to have come after a meeting about performance, Fairfax Media has been told that he had recently been eyeing off a possible return to Manly.

Mayer has told friends he is keen to remain involved with the game after previously working for Canterbury as events and operations general manager from 1999 to 2005 before becoming the foundation chief executive of French Super League club, Catalans Dragons.

He also worked as GWS Giants commercial operations general manager for three years before initially joining the Tigers in a similar position in October 2012 and being promoted to chief executive in July 2013 following the departure of Stephen Humphreys.

Wests Tigers chairwoman Marina Go said Mayer had been an asset to the joint-venture clubs for the last two years.

"Wests Tigers would like to thank Grant for his diligence and dedication to the club," Go said. "We look to take the next step in our evolution and a fresh approach to take us to the next level as a professional, world-class sporting organisation. Football operations general manager Phil Moss will be acting CEO until a replacement is found.

The Tigers have engaged professional search firm Crown & Marks to help find their next chief executive but O'Farrell has already emerged as a possible candidate.

O'Farrell's business contacts would be beneficial for a club whose financial position has raised speculation about its future in Sydney.

The former NSW premier is a fanatical Wests Tigers supporter and has a close relationship with many at the club and within the code.

A day after announcing his resignation as NSW premier in April last year, O'Farrell tweeted "a new career? #rugbyleague @nrl," alongside a photograph of himself wearing a green and gold Kangaroos blazer that appeared to be from the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.

A betting agency last year ran a book on O'Farrell's next career move, with the role of the next Wests Tigers CEO being favourite.

O'Farrell ah, well there are plenty of positives:
- a Tigers fan
- not just a career NRL CEO
- use to politics
- use to dealing with and management of joint owners sort of i.e. Libs and National Party compared to Tigers, Magpies and NRL
- use to being stabbed in the back
- use to dealing with bl00dy minded Greens Party
- he government connections might help in getting some $'s for Leichhardt Oval

Negatives:
- a Tigers fan
- not just a career NRL CEO
- use to politics
- use to dealing with and management of joint owners sort of i.e. Libs and National Party compared to Tigers, Magpies and NRL
- use to being stabbed in the back
- He doesn't recall, which could be a problem when player x says 'he offered me a contract upgrade'

I have no issue with O'Farrell

But I do have an issue with politicians being involved in Rugby League.

Politicians are polarising. People either love them or loathe them. You cannot have someone who is like that running a sports team. And it is little to do with anything O'Farrell has said or done. It's the fact that most of this country is either pro Liberal or pro Labor party.

Make him a club ambassador, give him some other role, like Corporate Sponsorship manager or something like that.

But you need a quality sports administrator running the club.

A high percentage of the population are like me - anti liberal/nationals, anti labour, anti the pigs feeding from the trough, anti people who deem the power (and not service) as the ultimate.

Mayer - no loss, was a grub.

O'barrell - no, see above.

People will like him if the club goes from strength to strength under his stewardship.

Like players, the opinion of administrators is generally influenced by their success.

Considering how this club operates I'd expect the following to happen-

1/ this somehow blows up in our faces,
2/ the hunt for new CEO takes time,
3/ acting CEO will not make any big calls
4/ club in hiatus eg player market
5/ new CEO will undo all that has been done and we start yet again,
6/ new CEO, coach and/or board do not get along
7/ another excuse for rebuilding and non-performance.

Call me cynical but..........................................

O'Farrell would have a huge network of contacts and I imagine being the former premier of the state would open up doors that we would previously have never been able to open. I don't see how this couldn't be beneficial for the club.

Liasing with the NRL, councils, big businesses - from the outside he seems like an ideal candidate.

The club is a business, and someone with O'Farrell's experience at the helm would only be a positive, IMO.

Let's just hope that no one tries to gift him a bottle of plonk. :sarcasm:

Magpies forever ur not being cynical as it's all par for the course for the way things get done @ this rabble of a club.

Personally I wouldn't go near O'farrell as he displayed what little integrity he has with his lack of recollection re the grange. This gift wasn't some forgettable goon bag.If someone gifted me a bottle of blue label JW I ain't ever going to 4get.

I don't know what others think but here is a quick tip to the person that is going to replace Mayer.

Get on a plane and go to NZ and talk to Bodene Thompson, when you get back from NZ, hire a car and drive to Canberra and speak to Blake Austin, last but not least, once you have finished talking to Blake, fly up to Brisbane and speak to Adam Blair....have a few days on the Gold Coast when you are finished!!!

Please, ask them what their coaches are doing differently to ours, what or more importantly who at our club is holding it back and what the f@#k we can do to get our s@#t together. I can't believe how well these guys are going at their new clubs....even Blair has been going well.

We just seem to be going backwards with what players we have. Quite frankly I am sick of hearing "oh, they are young, they'll come good" well if they are, they'd want to do it pretty damn quick...all other clubs are building and if we continue as we are, these young guys, if they remain the same can only reproduce the same result for next year....and that has been mediocrity.

I'd be interested to know what others think our new football manager can do to get us going in the right direction.

One wonders if all this crap that is going on at WT, and being obliquely referred to by Go, was behind the resignation? How much of Mayer's hand is on things rather than Humphreys & Sheens. Bet you Potter is glad he is out of this basket case.
