Nailed it. If the refs did their job(looking at you Archer)then the teams would have coached their players to comply or cut them from the squad for repeat offences. Coaches hold too much sway and it's made a mess of the game.
According to this forum a 'Referee' is superior to a 'Coach', imo bullshit but nevertheless referees determine what coaches are allowed to get away with. A good referee will do his job properly and a good coach will adjust accordingly

It happened on the weekend. The ref said stay out of it Mark and it was Matt from the Tigers and he got a penalty.

What do the silly pricks think a number is for? Anyway this game management bs needs to stop. Just penalise them if they infringe. Most players know what they are doing on the field and when they infringe. It is coached into them to push the boundaries.

How would that happen?
Interchange? How many interchanges will it cost the offending team?

Player is sent off and put out of the gane so the offending team is 1 player down on the bench.

For extreme foull play u could also leave them down a man for 10 or 20 mins. Costs the offending team an interchange to bring it back to 13. Just a thought.

Love this....can I add also no talking to players, never want to hear......"don't go early...get square ....release.....time your run.....both feet behind the line....play it with your foot....and the two worst calls ever .....surrender and milking"...the only time a ref should open his mouth is to blow the whistle.
As For step 4make sure it is the crusoe island and not the one Tom Hanks is on cause Tom had a ball to play with and you just know Archer would ruin that game

I'd suggest you take your complaints about hearing that stuff to Channel 9 and Fox Sports. It's been going on at all levels of refereeing of rugby league for more than 30 years. It isn't going to change.

I take you point "Grimey", heaps of people on a $100k, have abuse hurled at them as they perform there job, 1000's get abused as they arrive and leave their workplace, not mention objects being thrown at them for doing their job.

So many occasionally need a police escort from their place of employment as they leave to go home....yep, just another $100k job an average Joe has.

Just be careful "Grimey"..replace Homer Simpson with "Referee" and this could be you.

Glad you agree they're not thankless.

Yep you're right Captain it isn't going to change....some things have though,we no longer get to witness a touchie sprinting onto the field holding his flag high to report some infringement in back play.....ahhh nostalgia.

I know they don't. :) Instead they report it over their microphone to the referee.

Tony Archer admits officials got crucial calls wrong that all but end Gold Coast Titans season
TITANS

TWO tries scored by Penrith in their NRL round 20 win over Gold Coast came after officiating errors, according to referees boss Tony Archer.
Titans coach Neil Henry revealed Archer’s findings on Friday, in a further blow to the credibility of the NRL’s referees.

Archer advised Henry that tries to Matt Moylan and Waqa Blake were awarded incorrectly, in a loss that all but ended the Titans’ slim finals hopes.

Henry contacted Archer after the game on Saturday night but only received a response on Thursday.

Archer agreed with Henry that Moylan intercepted an Ashley Taylor pass from an offside position to score, while also agreeing that Blake’s runaway try should have been reviewed given doubt over a knock-on in the lead-up.

Gavin Badger, Jon Stone, Russell Turner, Brett Suttor were the officials on duty.

The findings add to a horror weekend for the NRL’s referees with Matt Cecchin coming under fire for not sending off Canberra’s Sia Solialia for a late, high shot on Melbourne’s Billy Slater.

Penrith’s 24-16 victory now means Gold Coast must win all of their remaining six games to be any chance of making the finals.

“In the context of our season they were two major calls so I’m thinking why wasn’t the proper procedure followed through,” Henry said, ahead of the Titans’ clash with Wests Tigers at Cbus Super Stadium on Sunday.

“My problem is that they didn’t go to review; I can’t think of another instance during the year when there’s been an attacker lose the ball and the opposition pick it up and score and it hasn’t been reviewed.

“I find it very strange it wasn’t looked at and very quick to be rewarded.”

Henry said coaches are frustrated with a lack of consistency surrounding black and white decisions, not discretionary calls.

“When you’ve got the bunker there for technology to look at whether or not it’s a try you should use the technology,” he said.

“It’s not going to be exact, they’re not going to get everything right, but there’s room for improvement and the confidence around the referees has taken a bit of a hit.”

So Moylan offside for the intercept.

Clear knock on by Waqa Blake that we could all see.

Yet none of them were referred to the bunker. That's f**ked up.

Can we talk about the Panthers player getting tripped, the referee penalising Penrith instead, Titans scoring off that set, and the Titans player copping a fine for said trip?

Conveniently overlooked by Henry - but otherwise he is spot on.

Intercept tries and knock on - regather tries should always be referred to the bunker just to be sure.

Or we can just move to a Captains Challenge system.

Surely they have some kind of analytics around how it's been used in U20s for all these years. I'd be amazed if it didn't have significantly better results than the current video ref system in the NRL comp

Yeah the trip that lead to our try was wrong too, can't deny that. Either way the refereeing of today is still not up to standard and doesn't look like improving anytime soon.

Hand on the ball penalties are terrible. The rule itself is stupid and has only been brought in because of all the other crap they have let players get away with.

The state of the ruck and play the ball at the moment is a dog's breakfast. In every game, I reckon you could find players breaking the rules at least 80% of the time. The question is, does anyone in the NRL have the cajones to direct the refs to referee the game to the letter of the law and ride out the inevitable moaning when we see 30-40 penalties per game for a while.

That's where the pocket ref shpuld come in.

Not playing the ball with the foot? Penalty.

Walking off the mark? Penalty.
