It's no secret that top-level professional sport is a cut-throat business these days, but Chris McQueen's departure from the Rabbitohs earlier this year is an example of just how quickly things can change.

After debuting in 2009 and playing 115 games for the Bunnies, McQueen was forced out by the return of Sam Burgess following the Englishman's stint in rugby union.

Speaking to Denan Kemp on The Locker Room, McQueen revealed that with Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire overseas during pre-season, the club kept him in the dark about plans to unload him.

“It was frustrating – Madge wasn’t there for the start of pre-season – and I’ve got nothing but kind words to say about Madge, he was always really open and honest,” said McQueen.

“The frustrating part was, I heard all these rumours in the papers and that sort of thing, you know ‘Souths are trying to sign Sam and they’ll have to offload players and McQueen’s gonna be shown the door.’

“At the start of pre-season I went and spoke to someone in the offices and went ‘look, what’s going on here? There’s all these rumours, no one’s tried to contact me and tell me otherwise.’

“I actually looked him in the eyes and said ‘I’m a grown man, I need someone to look me in the eye and tell me honestly what’s going on. I understand if I’ve gotta go, but someone has to tell me.’

“(He said) ‘nah mate, nah we’re not getting rid of anyone.’

“The next day, Madge came back to training and I got the tap on the shoulder and he said ‘look, this is the direction we’re heading…’”

McQueen revealed that he broke down when telling his teammates he was heading to the Titans.

“I went in and got all the boys in there and Madge goes ‘he’s been here a long time and he’s been part of the club for a long time, done great things,’” said McQueen.

“He’s done his speech and I went to say my goodbyes and I just fell apart – I was an absolute mess.

“I was pretty open with everything from the moment I got that tap on the shoulder. I told the boys that I was looking for a different club and looking to leave, but when it actually happens, it’s hard to say goodbye.”

Sad to hear that.

I knew it was something along those lines though.

There was something wholehearted about McQueen. I agree on his form having been down but I thought he might rectify it. Seems like he has at the Titans, though I'm sure I'll be told his 'stats' are comparable.

I really liked him and the occasions I actually spoke with him, he came across as a decent enough fella.

I was actually quite gutted he left. Sturdy, workmanlike players are hard to find and keep. The let one go is silliness IMHO.

I liked McQueen but that's the way the the cookie crumbles. It happens the away too, players get better contracts and blind side the club even though the club thought the player would be loyal......not saying what happened was right but we should except it as the norm by now.
