Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith sick of negative stigma

By Andrew Webster
March 12, 2009 In the wake of the Brett Stewart affair and the subsequent public backlash against players, Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith says he is fed up with a small group of players ruining the reputation of the rest in the NRL.
Smith, who attended the launch of the State of Origin season in Melbourne with Storm coach Craig Bellamy, said it was time players took responsibility for their own actions.
The Queensland and Australian hooker also expressed sympathy for the 17-year-old girl who Stewart is alleged to have sexually assaulted.
"It's unfortunate for everyone involved - not just Brett and the Eagles - but the girl as well," a genuinely concerned Smith said.
"I have sympathy for her, too. And now he's been charged ... it's very disappointing, the whole thing."
Smith is angry that players continually making headlines for alcohol-fuelled antics are casting the entire NRL in a bad light.
"I'm sick of it bringing every other bloke down," he said.
"It's not like every player goes out on the drink and plays up and gets in trouble.
"It's the minortity of the playing group. There's 400 in the comp and only a dozen running amok.
"My first reaction was that it was disappointing because it involves a guy who is one of the leading players.
"Given it's the first week of the comp, it's a time when everyone should be looking forward to seeing some football played. Not reading about stories like this all week."
During the official part of Wednesday's launch, Bellamy spoke about "needing to find a full-back" when asked about the positions he had to find replacements for.
Pressed on the issue later as word that Stewart had been suspended until round 5 filtered through the function, the coach said he wants the incumbent full-back in his side.
"If he's playing, and he's available for selection, I think he should be in the side," Bellamy said.
"That's only my opinion. Selectors have a say in that, and so does the NSWRL."

i'm sick of hearing a different comment from Cameron Smith twice a day about absolutely everything.

although he may have a point here, aren't there any other players in the NRL that can comment on things?

He is our captain and he does get asked all the questions at different events/functions etc and then journos publish it.

Honestly if you were the captain of an NRL side who had to show up at a whole range of functions and asked questions by the media could you say 'no comment'?

Closely followed by "League World vomits at Bartmans moralising and double standards".

f**k you twigs hate on cameron smith too much. He is probably sick (along with all the other captains) of getting asked about brett stewart, todd carney, greg bird, and all the other dickheads in the game.

Let's all have a go at Cameron Smith for being honest and logical.

Is there anything in his quotes that people really disagree with...??

Maybe they could ask Smith about the negative press that sprang from grapple tackles?

Cameron Smith and many others may look very foolish for their hasteful condemnation of Stewart depending on how things turn out... Publicly declaring his sympathy for the girl says a lot about his thoughts on Stewart..hmmm

A convicted fraudster with a long criminal history is apparently the only witness, and all DNA tests have come out negative. For all we know the girl and her dad are just looking for a quick buck and some attention and Brett Stewart is the victim. That is just a maybe. What I'm saying is let things pan out a little bit before we all condemn Stewart and become the girls shoulder to cry on.

I'm sure he's not the only one who is fed up with players carrying on and sullying the game. He's entitled to his opinion as much as anyone else is.

When I saw the thread title I thought he was gonna be whinging about how everyone thinks negatively of the Storm....but no he's whinging about players from others clubs indiscretions. Shut the f*ck up for once Cameron. Captain the Roos for a couple of games and all of a sudden he's the authority on all things Rugby League. This guy really believes his own hype.
