Merging Premier League

As i`m primarily a Magpie supporter i`ve been fully against merging the Premier League teams up until now,but with the past couple of shocking results the Magpies have had coupled with the fact that their management seemingly do NOTHING to improve the club as a whole,NOTHING to provide a proffessional coaching set up,NOTHING to recruit or retain players to help make the side a Premiership winning force and most importantly NOTHING to reward their loyal supporters, give them any real hope for the future and ultimately it`s doing LITTLE to win over the full support of the Campbelltown region! If this all can`t be changed quickly, the best alternative will be to merge entirely!

I am not sure that merging will fix the administrative issues unfortunately. I think the answer is getting some people working in those areas that you mentioned who are gonna start making things happen.

The club needs a successful mentality from top to bottom, the issues that you talk about will not only affect the PL sides, but they will filter through to the Wests Tigers side.

If the sides merged, then the same people would be responsible for the operations of the merged team and nothing will change.

It'd be interesting to see the Magpies standings in 1sts, reserves/PL & Jersy Flegg since they moved to Cambo.....I know they've had a little success, but I rememebr the talk in 86-87....the words 'dominate' and 'nursery' etc etc were bandied around a lot....it made sense and the future looked rosy but thing havent lived up to expectations.
Unit..........are you up to it?

I originally was against a PL merge....but for the last year Ive changed my mind.....keep the Magpies and Balmain as they are up to Flegg, merge PL and get the best squad out of the two and get rid of the deadwood, pro reserve graders.

get rid of the deadwood,

Why wouldn't they just get Western Suburbs to close their doors then?

Balmain does not need your help in the junior dept and can be in the top 8 by ourselves thank you very much 8)

Yeah, heaps of young families can afford to live in the Balmain district can`t they??? They have the second least juniors behind the Roosters only Balmain haven`t got a spare 2 million each year to recruit players with.Admittedly they have been going reasonably well over the past couple of years, but how long do you realistically think that will last with the ever decreasing number of juniors to work with.I`m from the Inner West myself so I hate to say it,but the whole area is turning yuppyish and will continue to do so until there are no kids at all growing up in the area.Funnily enough, that`s why the Campbelltown is an integral part of the merged club!

Last week Ray Hadley said that it costs 500k per season to run a PL team. I believe for the cost savings and the improvement in talent we should merge the sides. My merged premier league side would look like

1.Greally
2. McGunniess
3.NFI
4.NFI
5.Duffy
6.Brannigan
7.Kerr
8.Lima
9.Farrah/De Grotis (spl)
10.Small
11.Patterson
12.Graham
13.Fulton

That side would be competitive, i dont really know the PL squads all that well, but that side woiuld look good

From last nights game (If your talking about juniors) :
Magpies (4/17) 24%
Balmain (3/17) 18%
Other 58%

Didnt count Senter for Balmain or Fitzhenry for Magpies. Not sure if they are.

They are all actually Wests Tigers players.

My argument on this issue is always that if having two teams is such an advantage why aren't other clubs out their trying to recruit QLD cup or Jim Beam teams and stacking them with younger players? Surely 20 "reserve grade" players is enough for any NRL team. I think we have to look at what is premier league? Is it a local comp for semi professionals or is a breeding ground for the next generation of NRL players (ask the Roosters or Bulldogs that question). I think the whole idea of having two teams is ridiculous and is definently holding us back! It's time we fully become one, I love the Magpies and Balmain, but I love the Wests Tigers 1000% more. The anti merger people still out number we pro mergers but I think that stat is starting to turn around. Anyway thats just my opinion people. :D

I`d have to say that the Wests Tigers have a surprising amount of young fans.If the club can become more successful on the field that will only keep increasing!

The one vital fact most pro-mergers miss is that the mystery $500k figure doesn't go to the JV. It just wouldn't be spent at all. If there was one premiers side the JV may get a compensatory funding boost from the leagues clubs, but you can bet London to a brick that it wouldn't be anything like $1million, and it's no certainty it would even be $500k. Wests League would probably just keep the lions share, and due to their circumstances it's 100% certain that Balmain Leagues would wish to keep the lot. The amount of money that the JV gets from the combined leagues clubs is effectively limited by what Balmain can afford due to the 50:50 split. So if Balmain can only come up with an extra 100 thou or so then the combined side might actually become a drain on the JV rather than a blessing.

If Hadley knew what he was talking about then he wouldn't have made that statement - all together both sides combined I doubt would cost $500k a season to run!!!!!

On top of this the Wests Tigers don't run the clubs let alone fund them Balmain and Western Suburbs do!

I know that Balmain are for a combined PL side for next year however Wests won't have a part in it and fair enough - for Balmains sake I wouldn't want to see the sides merged but for the sake of the WTS I think it is the best thing - It will happen in the next few years though I have no doubt about it!
