Western Suburbs budget is around the $800k mark, so it ain't cheap. This does include all of the junior development expenses though.

All the junior Development is the key words - Balmain spend close to that but abit less, however there PL sides are not having $500k spent on them each year!

In terms of pure player payment - yep no where near half a mil. The potential savings are grossly overstated (unless you're going to cut a hell of a lot of development and junior funding), and like I said any savings are far more likely to be absorbed by the leagues clubs than handed over as extra cash for the JV.

Argue for it in terms of dead wood if you like, but how confident are you that the ones who aren't performing now would have been the ones to miss out last November?

Well one for example might be Tere Glassie.....

has been in reserve grade for how long?

has played how many first grade games?/////

There are other pro reserve graders in both that will be nothing more.
IMO they are just geniusing the juniors development below them.

Its all a bit of a gamble though isnt it?
when you see players like Justin Hodges and Nick graham under achieving.

There is alot from both sides to be honest

Nick Grahme wouldn't be classed as a PL contracted player because he is on an NRL contract but if we did put the 2 sides together we would have a very competitive side on the park

Magpies would have to be willing to have McGuiness leave though of course

My point Ink is that you can't guarantee that the right dead wood would be cut. Wests have struggled this year, but I doubt it'll be the same next year. The point is two teams gives more players the chance to show what they've got. Kerr wouldn't have been at the club if there was only one side.

While I don't disagree there are 'pro' reserve graders who never seem to crack first grade, I feel they are as necessary as those average first graders who never go on to higher honours.

Often it is the toilers who are the cement of a team and provide the experience and guidance for the young up and comers, even if they don't have the goods themselves.

On the merger idea, I say no.

One it's another nail in the coffin of two clubs I respect (one I love more than other I must admit).

Two - why do you think so many clubs have a range of feeder clubs around them and foster as many alliances as possible? Because it provides depth, and depth provides both choice and opportunity.

Think about why Cronulla and the Jets are getting together. If you think it's just so they can hold hands behind the dunnies at Henson Park, you've either been standing in the dunnies at the southern end of Leichardt for too long or pulling too many bongs in the burbs.

Three - it's not about winning PL or Flegg (although any silverware would be nice).

Four - as someone pointed out the money is not an issue as the Weststigers would not get the money from either Balmain or Wests f the sides were merged.

get rid of the deadwood,

Why wouldn't they just get Western Suburbs to close their doors then?

Balmain does not need your help in the junior dept and can be in the top 8 by ourselves thank you very much 8)
I'M SORRY!!!WESTERN SUBURBS CLOSE THEIR DOOR'S??? I can assure you TUGGER the Magpies won't be the one's closing their door's first pal!!

Last week Ray Hadley said that it costs 500k per season to run a PL team. I believe for the cost savings and the improvement in talent we should merge the sides. My merged premier league side would look like

1.Greally
2. McGunniess
3.NFI
4.NFI
5.Duffy
6.Brannigan
7.Kerr
8.Lima
9.Farrah/De Grotis (spl)
10.Small
11.Patterson
12.Graham
13.Fulton

That side would be competitive, i dont really know the PL squads all that well, but that side woiuld look good
Don't know about putting the 2 NFI's in the centre's mate.

swans fans and sailing, give yourself a smack in the head
the north shore is just as " rugby league " as the inner west
demographic changes have been more abrupt in the inner west so i suspect you're more likely to be surronded by swans fans!

Sadly enough the increase in AFL and union fans in the Balmain district is certainly increasing, that culture in the area of supporting the tigers is still there but certainly not like the old days.

The support in the area is beyond a joke compared to 15 years ago. I remember almost every shop on Darling Street had some sort of Black & Gold in their shop Window. Now the only place that has those clours would be the Wizard Home Loans office and that has nothing to do with the Balmain Tigers or Wests!

I believe that this lack of support can be directly blamed on Balmain's administration, who have obviously not contacted local business or if they have, have done a shocking job of it.

In relation to demographics, i believe that whilst you can blame the demise of a club based on that, however i believe that a smart business evolves to suit its customers, which is what fans are.
