Both in red hot form for their clubs heading into the World Cup. In your opinion, who do you think is the better of the two?

What scares me about Messi is that he's been the best player in the world for a couple of years now, and he's only 22.

Messi for mine too. Rooney is in good form... now, however Messi has been great for a few years now, and as Ridders said, he's only 22.

Rooney, Torres, and Average Carlos have all been brilliant this season.

But Lionel Messi is in a totally different stratosphere to any player in this decade at least.

Rooney has become a great finisher, has a high workrate and a great team man but Messi's talent is unmatched. Messi scores the type of goals you'd score playing Fifa on amateur mode

Rooney is a truly world class player. Clearly one of the top 3 players in the world at present and despite only being in his early 20's he's already perhaps England's best player since Bryan Robson.

But Lionel Messi is disturbingly good. It's clear in my mind now that he's easily the best player since Zidane in his prime...and i never thought id see a player as good again as Zinedine but Messi may turn out to be his equal. Ronaldo, the original model, was arguably the best player the world has seen for about a year whilst at Barca but Messi has maintained his form for a few years now....

So for a 22 year old to IMO already be considered alongside the likes of Maradona, van Basten, Dalglish and Ronaldo as one the best forwards over the last 30 years is incredible.

And as a lover of the beautiful game and having never gotten to see Zidane in action im determined to one day see Messi in his prime at the Nou Camp.

hmmm... just to throw a spanner in the works here...

what about Messi's international form?? i think its fair to say he has struggled at international level so far.

theres a criticism doing the rounds that Messi is only effective if the whole team is geared around him...

so if Messi has a poor tournament on the biggest stage of them all... how do we judge??

Surely adaptability should be a key thing hes judged on.

something to think about...

BTW... i think Messi is better... because he creates as much as he scores. where as Rooney is a workhorse striker...

Fair point. The World Cup will tell us alot because many of the recent greats have dominated on the biggest stage including Maradona, Zidane and Ronaldo.

But to be fair to Messi he has suffered greatly under poor management at International level. He was criminally underused at the 2006 World Cup. The Argies manager (can't remember who...) should have faced trial for using Messi off the bench in that tournament.

And under Maradona Argentina have been a circus. What has he used, something like 75 players since taking contorl? How can any player find a rhythm under that kind of system...

Rooney is better. He can lead a line on his own, score goals, create goals, play as a winger and he is willing to track back. All better or in the case of a winger as good as Messi. The complete footballer.

Messi has some silky skills but he can't take a game by the scruff of the neck like Rooney.

Oh and Ronaldo is the best player in Spain.

exactly

rooney = best player in the epl

epl = best league in the world

therefore rooney = best player in the world (followed closely by ffl)

messi actually isn't even that good. i doubt the people hyping him up even watch la liga. anyone who watches barcelona knows that yaya toure is the primary factor behind all their success of late. if messi was better than ronaldo it's his voice we'd hear on the castrol commercial

Well Messi would be top of the league at least...

And yes EPL is the best league, Rooney is the best in that league, therefore yes he is carrying united to the top of that league, and did a job on AC Milans defence.

Still I hear Zaragoza are famous the world over for there water tight defence...

That is probably the dumbest comment I've ever read on here.

Dear me.

Ignorant comments about Messi aside, he is brilliant. However, Rooney and Drogba are the two best players in the world RIGHT NOW.

Dear me.

Care to explain?

All i read on this forum are experts saying that Rooney is carrying United. If he gets injured United, and England are stuffed and may as well not bother turning up.

Correct?

Now i look at the league table and i see United top, just put 7 past the team one point behind Inter in the league and has rubbish like Nesta playing for them.

Now i look at Barca and they are not top of the league, they couldn't even win in Germany (which United did against the German champions with a reserve team earlier in the season).

Why couldn't they? Messi could not win it on his own for Barca. Rooney can for United. Therefore on that basis, Rooney is better.

It really is that simple.

Last year's German champions, Wolfsburg, are a middle table Bundesliga team this season, coming 10th. Nice argument.

Barca are tied on points with Real while United are two points ahead of Arsenal. Massive difference .

Imo this Barca team isn't as good as last years one, mainly due to the loss of Eto'o, yet they are still doing very well. Alot of that has to do with the fact that Messi has single handedly won numerous games for Barca in instances when they've looked flat.

So Wolfsberg are not the champions?

If the season ended now then being 2 points clear or behind on goal difference is a bit different yeah. You see, one hand your at the top, on the other your not.

Barca are second in a league that 3rd is 18 points behind. They have Zlatan in for Eto'o, Xavi, Inesta, the great yaya toure etc. remember, not the one man team that are top of the EPL.

So yeah, nice argument. Cheers. ;-)
