METALLICA's official web site has been updated with a six-minute video message from the band regarding the group's recently completed shows with THE ROLLING STONES and the early songwriting session for the band's next studio album, tentatively due in late 2006. A few excerpts from the message follow:

Lars Ulrich: "It was fun getting out of the house and playing a couple of shows, getting a little sweat going, and getting up and sharing some metal moments with our San Francisco friends. And there was a bunch of you guys that flew in from all corners of the country and the world, so we appreciate that. It was fun. And it kind of got us kind of back into the mode of being 'TALLICA again, so we've been here [in the rehearsal room] . . . kicking around the last couple of weeks, working on some new, uh… some new what?" (looks at Hetfield)

James Hetfield: "New metal."

Kirk Hammett: "No, it's not 'nu' metal. It's metal."

James Hetfield: "K-N-E-W. Knew metal. We knew metal, and still know metal."

Kirk Hammett: "Actually, this is more like Jurassic metal."

James Hetfield: "We have a lot of ideas. We just have to figure out which ones are good. That's all."

Lars Ulrich: "We need some help. Maybe some of you guys can come join us and help figure that out."

James Hetfield: "No."

Kirk Hammett: "Or we're gonna flip a coin.'

Robert Trujillo: "We're actually in 'fiddle' mode right now. We're like fiddling with the ideas, kind of blueprinting them…"

James Hetfield: "We've got a fiddle on the next record."

Lars Ulrich: "'METALLICA – next album will have a lot of fiddle on it' — headline on Blabbermouth."

James Hetfield: "it's has been the best break — best break that I can remember. All the other breaks I don't remember. [Laughs] It was a great time hanging out at home. Just got really into being at home. It was really nice hanging out. We're pretty fortunate — we've got HQ here, we kind of show up when we want and we start writing some material. We live just down the street, so it's a pretty cool set-up."

Lars Ulrich: It's been so much fun the last couple of weeks getting back together, getting all creative again for the first time in a couple of years, and hanging with Rob and getting him involved in the writing process. It's been a lot of fun, we're all really psyched and going into the holidays with spunky spirit. We're looking forward to throwing a lot of sh*t at you guys next year and having some fun."

I am glad they clarified knew and not nu metal... A few solo's and old school sound on this album would be an improvement on the last.. Can't wait !!

David: Joe stumpy Pepys...great great...uh...tall blond geek...

Nigel: Uh.. good drummer.
David: Great look, good drummer.
Nigel: Good, good drummer....
David Fine drummer....
Marty: What happened to him?
David: He died, he, he died in a bizarre gardening accident some years back.
Nigel: It was really one of those things...it was...you know...the
authorities said...you know...well best leave it unsolved,
really...you know.
Marty: And he was replaced by...uh....
David: Stumpy Joe - Eric Stumpy Joe Childs.
Marty: What happened to Stumpy Joe?
Derek: Well, uh, it's not a very pleasant story...but, uh, he died...
uh...he choked on...the ac- the official explanation was he

David: He passed away.
Nigel: It was actually, was actually someone else's vomit. It's not....
David: It's ugly.
Nigel: You know. There's no real....
Derek: You know they can't prove whose vomit it was...they don't

David: You can't print, there's no way to print a spectra-photograph...

I saw Metallica at the Big Day Out they played, and was bored sh*tless.

Thier gig at the Syd Ent Centre was far better, saw em there and then at the BDO and the Ent was the better gig. My highlight from the Ent Cen show was when they played Sanitarium followed by The Thing That Should Not Be, hearing those 2 songs live and back to back was awesome, besides Kirk's solo I freaking love Thingy live, recorded is ok but Thingy comes into it's own when you get to witness the beast live.

Metallica entering the studio and the direction they want to go all sounds good to me until you get to the point where Bob Rock is producing again. The amount of songs I like from Metallica pre-Bob compared to how many good songs they've done post-Bob is shocking. I'll be happy to go and watch them live one more time but won't be counting down the days to a release date.

I remeber hearing all these good things before the release of St. Anger - promising a return back to the thrash days, but were were given the worst record I have ever heard which didn' even remotely resemble thrash. It sounded like a bloke who was learning drums, and some down tuned pathetic guitar riffs. I smashed my CD in disgust

I didn't go that far, I listened to it a fair bit when I forst got it and tried to look for something on there, maybe I just got caught up in the fact that Lars was using double kicks again that it took a while to sink in that there was not much going on and now I can't hear it without wanting to FIX THAT F*CKING SNARE!!!

The production was awfull. I know they were trying to go for the "garage" sound but it just sounds terrible. The drums sound like Lars is playing the pots and pans in the kitchen

they lost me for good with Load. They have lost all direction and the riff writing is pathetic, deadset, when I was about 13 just getting into guitar 15 years ago, my riffs sounded like the crap on St Anger. I was a huge fan all my teen years (and even earlier) but they destroyed me when Load came out. I got St anger about 2 days before the official release (and it cost me a pretty penny for the so called "privlege") out at Richmond when I lived in Sydney. I honestly nearly turned the car around on the 15 minute car ride home I was that annoyed at how the album sounded. Like everyone else I was estatic that they were apparently going back to the thrash roots and all, but my god, they didn't have to take their ability back to the garage.

The last straw for me with them was watching the Doco, seeing my heroes from my younger days act like 9 year school girls was hilarious, I can't believe how far they have come (and i don't mean that in the good sense either). I always thought Lars was the problem, but IMO from the doco, Jaymz needs a good kick in the ass, the whole " I can only work between 1 and 6pm times" or whatever it was, goddamn man, yeah you were an alcho, join the club, get over it and get your ass in the studio and go to work. Kirk is too nice for his own good, if i were him, i would have left the sinking ship looooooooong ago. In summary, the death of Sir Cliff (and I don't mean Cliff Richard) was the worst thing that ever happened to the band, followed by Bob Rock (the stupid prick can't play bass or sing as was evident in the doco, yet he is on the album, bass I mean) ever taking the reigns on in the studio. Just my opinion, not bagging anyone out who likes 'em. I was once a huge fan, but not these days. Take it easy

Yeah for me the sign of the sinking ship was the black album. Even though it had some good songs - you could see the direction changing for the worse. It wasn't until load that the full effect of this was realised. Metallica should have changed their name after the Black album.

Such a let down to the fans that had been so loyal to them over the years. I use Metallica these days for a bit of comic releif rather than to listen to some music

I liked their old stuff better.

Isn't that what all the cool kids say?

Funny thing is, you would be surprised how many people out there think that the "BLACK"album is the bands first.

I agree with most of what has been said here and all I want to add is BRING BACK FLEMMING RASMUSSEN!

I actually found a lot of good stuff on the loads... after many years of trying, even the black album took a few years to grow on me. I liked St Anger, it was different and thats the way they have always been.. I don't mind them doing different things and i expect this next one to be different also. There is no way they can go back to their formor glories and produce another MOP or AJFA, i think they are past being able to do that so we shouldn't expect it..
